Kills do matter. You still need to be able to kill the last guy if you want to win. But kills are definitely not the only attraction in this game. And kill count most definitely doesn't give more fun. The most memorable wins I ever had in my 2k hours of PubG were 4 kills solo squad win and a 0 kills solo win (yeah finally managed to do that, once XD). I'm definitely gonna do a 0 (or at least 1) kills win in Apex too, when they add a solo mode.
Also, the start of learning is always the most fun, at least for me. Going from 0.01 k/d to 0.5 k/d may take half a year, but it will still be less than going from 2 k/d to 3 k/d. You progress much faster at the start. Enjoy the fast progress while it lasts 😉. You don't need to compare yourself to others to have satisfaction, compare to yourself, a month, a year ago - see the progress you've made and you'll feel goood (it definitely helps if you have some replays from back before - you can laugh at how bad you were back then; if you keep your proudest moments on record, you'll one day see that you can do those things 'on demand' and those are just daily business to you).
Also, people who get their first BR win (in solo mode, squad wins don't matter, since you can get carried) after 600+ hours seem to be MUCH more exhilarated about it than ppl who got it on their 10th game. The more work you put in, the sweeter the results.
