I’m not convinced that reducing the SBMM would result in the game dying. Apex was doing well before they ramped things up (back before the Duos update in 2019); the game had grossed close to half a billion at that point. I agree that they are probably making even more money now, we’re talking about a company maximizing profits, not outright saving their game from death.
I get it though. People love their SBMM. Some people feel that every single match should be as ultra competitive and sweaty as possible. SBMM isn’t going anywhere. But my argument is that they need to reward above average players more for their skill.
If I’m going to sweat in public lobbies that LITERALLY have over 80% Pred contrails (despite those players only constituting less than 1% of the player base) then I should be offered greater incentive to play. Once you reach level 500, sweating in pubs is actually pointless. They need to either increase the level cap or offer better rewards.

@Axs5626Sxa5001 You might have some points there. I think it depends how it's reduced. I'm a mediocre player who has some brilliant moments. I don't mind when I'm bumped into the predator lobbies.

It’s been particularly aggressive lately, which is honestly disheartening.
Take yesterday for example. I played 28 pub games, with two of my friends who are of relative equal skill. We lost all of them. Highest damage in one match was 1140 (no one is “going off” in these lobbies). Came in 2nd once. I wish I could say these games were fun, but honestly it was just kind of stressful, as the majority of the lobby were Preds and Masters. One tiny mistake and you get one clipped.
Ironically, my other three friends (who are average players; they tend to get to Gold 1 but never plat) played their own pubs. They played 23 pub games. They won 3.
We had totally different experiences, and this is VERY common. It’s almost like players who are above average are (on average) having a more stressful time than players of other skill levels. This is what SBMM does though. And as mentioned before, it isn’t going anywhere. It’s not even as bad in Apex as it is in games like CoD. But the effect and implications are there.
I agree that as a free to play battle royal, there actually should be SBMM. But I think it should look more like it did before the duos update. Back then, you had good players performing better than weaker players overall (this idea shouldn’t be controversial). But right now, I am in Masters and I am performing similarly to my friends who can’t get out of Gold. It’s kind of silly, no?- DarthValtrex5 years agoHero (Retired)@Axs5626Sxa5001 Yeah I could see that, I'm working my way through platinum and the lobbies get progressively harder. I can understand the stress of them. I also feel like high rank or high skill lobbies are a completely different game.
PUBS for me are not always high skill, it depends how I've been doing. But in PUBS I have no issue running odd load outs and just having fun. I also don't really pay much attention to map rotation. Just sort of gun where the ring takes me. Where as in ranked I have very specific load outs I go for. I want a G7, Hemlock or sniper with a solid CQC gun.- 5 years ago
In ranked gold, opponents are way more difficult than those pred matces you watch streamers play on youtube. Da f is this???
