Steam Input. Legal? OR CHEAT?

Lately I've seen several players who perform strange movements, such as scripted automatic Tap-Strafing.

I was wondering what it was?

I discovered that Steam allows you to configure your Controller so that pressing 1 button sends a series of commands from your keyboard or mouse to the game.

I think that it is definitely not playing fair, it is a setting that is available to all players

For someone who doesn't understand anything about programming like me. I think it's very easy to solve simply when you press a button on your controller the game stops receiving keyboard commands for a few seconds

  • If you're in my console lobby; cheat. I report all PC players for impossible movement the moment I sense something is not a standard console controller thing.

For me macros - pushing one key and getting multiple pre-selected pressed keys - is a cheat. No matter the platform.

  • Same. they are using configuration files to cheat, insane 100% movememt  successs rate. I just reportt them for impossible movement but it  probably doesn't do anything, maybe if there are a lot reports it does something

im a mouse and keyboard player aswell but refuse to use config cheat files. It's banned in ALGS official tournsments but Respawn does nothint abut these cheaters

I am glad you guys are discussing this here since I stumbled upon a video where they were telling PC players how to do this, and something just didn't seem right about it to me.  One was the triple flip move where they flip their whole body horizontally while jumping, is that the one tap strafe you are referring to?

Anyway,  I'm curious to see if any mods on here have anything to say about how the company feels about players that alter scripts or figure out how to consolidate actions into one button on a controller.  I would just like to know what the official policy is on this and if it helps to report it when you see it.  Thanks.

All I know is the following:

"When you access or use an EA Service, you agree that you will not:"

"Modify any file or any other part of the EA Service that EA does not specifically authorize you to modify."

    https://www.ea.com/legal/user-agreement

Adjusting config files has been allowed in the past in tournaments, but it was specifically allowed for in the rules for those tournaments, but not in recent tournaments.

Scripts and macros that give an advantage are obviously cheating.

"We ask everyone to play within the rules of the game and refrain from tampering or using cheats"

    https://www.ea.com/security/amp/news/eaac-deep-dive

You can only fiddle with the in game settings, it is a good rule not to get yourself banned now or in the future.

    "Keep Things Fair

Play games the way that they are meant to be played.

Don’t: Use exploits, cheats, undocumented features, design errors, bugs or problems to get a leg up on others"

    https://www.ea.com/commitments/positive-play/charter#keep-things-fair

And as a word of warning from Hideouts:

By common sense you know what is cheating and what is not,
but will the others play honestly?
When Steam is the most used platform and with a couple of clicks you activate these settings.
I know that thousands of players use it because of the numbers in the steam config downloads, because a guide on youtube exceeds 20,000 visits in a week.
WHAT will Respawn do? ban thousands? try to fix the game? They could collaborate with the steam devbs to disable steam input in apex at least leave it in basic mode.
Because they know this and are working on a solution? right?

    @sebashooter

I choose play honestly. That others choose not to, and risk losing their account, is a bit sad imo.

I have no idea what is in the works by the developers, but I would again draw your attention to Conor's warning above, it speaks volumes.

@sebashooter Respawn has neither the influence nor the money to force steam to disable controller settings.

respawn plays by the rules of steam and not the other way arround.

i mean they could’ve thought about that problem when they shipped the game to steam but they didn’t care.

is it cheating ? Don’t know every steam player has access to it, and since it’s used by the platform I wouldn’t bet that people get banned for it.

So no there is no collaboration going on, it’s a steam feature that steam advertised and put development time into, but not just that, it’s actually a quite good feature with a lot of complexity possibilities and detail… for steam this is a business investment, because it makes people use steam instead of a different client. There will be something in the contract about it, and altering a contract like that isn’t that easy 😉

and for what ? Because some people use some movement techs ? Ain’t happening sir

btw tapstrafing with controller even with steam settings is not even close to as good as with mnk… with controller its very unprecise
