Sudden spike in difficulty

Hey everyone! First post here, so my apologies if this has been discussed ad nauseum in the past threads, but I had a question about a sharp spike in lobby difficulty, which seems to have happened literally overnight.

A few days ago, I started playing again for the first time in well over a year, and honestly, I wasn't doing too bad; at least for someone who hadn't played a game in that long (a handful of wins, 3-7 kill games). Generally speaking, my teammates and opponents matched my skill level, as indicated by their banner info before the games started. Even the champions had similar win/kills rates to me, with the occasional odd player out that was a real beast. All seemed to be going pretty normally for several dozen games, but as of this morning, I am queued up with players that have thousands of kills and hundreds of wins (in this season alone!).

My main question: What gives?!?

I'll be the first to say that I love a good challenge. Games that treat the player with kid gloves don't feel rewarding and grow stale very quickly. But this was like moving from little league to the major leagues out of the clear blue.

Is this due to Respawn/EA's SBMM? Or do they even have that set up?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

  • @SenorHeisenberg There can be so many things that can cause this. You might just be having a bad day, you could have been pushed up into a higher tier lobby because you were playing better.. It could be so many things.

The players with thousands of kills and hundreds of wins die just as much as everyone else. I have over 2000 kills on the season and over 100 wins. I die frequently, my KD is 1.16 at the moment. So I'm basically dying almost every round I play but I'm getting at least 1 kill and occasionally more than 1.

Don't be discouraged by high kills and high wins. View it as practice, when ever I end up in the lobbies with people who have over 100k on their legends I typically die and I'm happy if I get a single kill or put up a good enough fight that it was close. But when SBMM drops me down into easier lobbies I shred.
  • @SenorHeisenberg I can explain Sir BreakingBad. If you don’t want some fun analogy of a story first read from paragraph 4. Otherwise enjoy the reading ;D

When you went away, you left mankind behind while the earth was destroyed. Upon returning to earth you saw a sign saying ‘exploded, next earth is here’ with directions in another point in our solar system.

You met up and played with other individuals of similar expertise/skillz. So also ppl who recently came back or who have played for a while but are just stuck at a certain skill lvl.

This is the set up that you get for a bit. Might be some games or might even be tens of them. But after you acclimatized to the new earth suddenly some alien predators came and uprooted everything again and destroyed new earth just like that!

In other words; When you don’t play for a while or if you play badly for a while, you get put in ‘lesser’ (either easy, bot or a sort of ease-in) lobby to test your metal. Both for the system to re-evaluate you and for you to get a hang of the game again.

When the game has seen enough you get put up against better ppl according to how you played.

    That’s basically what happens.

@SenorHeisenberg Yea so as with any shooters. Just stay the course and you’ll best the bestest cause you’ll get your game sense back and know how to orientate your way around again.

Even titans bleed. It may be difficult and aggravating but you can overcome it. Otherwise, there’s always an option to just third party everything you hear and hope for the best...
  • Thanks so much! This place has some very competent and friendly people. As a person who has spent his fair share of time getting reamed out in toxic forums for just asking questions, and even worse, on Twitter seeing other people getting destroyed for just asking questions, this is a breath of fresh air. 🙂

@SenorHeisenbergLolz.... I’m basically caustic on a bad day... but like helping out whenever I can. But I’m downright a cesspool that could even make Caustic’s Water treatment seem like Crystal Clear Water if need be xD.

But yea... the internetz... such a weird place. Getting flamed for not asking ‘the right question’... weird ppl.

If you have questions, just ask them here. Most times you get decent replies... as long as you don’t demand things.... or say that you’re going to sue Respawn, EA or whatever... cause them you’ll get those funny replies XD

    Don’t mind @hayhor. He’s just giddy right now :P
