I was pretty lazy and couldn't put the link in the original post, but here it is.
As you can see the developers have stated that they do see it as an important feature and the biggest part is "However, we will talk more about this at our Steam launch later in the year."
It could be referring to Origin/Steam cross progression which we already know is coming or next-gen console plans however the fact they put information in the statement about cross progression makes it unlikely.
We'll just have to wait for the Steam release.
