@CyberMstMatchmaking is definitely a wildcard in this game, but I'd be willing to guess that the above probably says more about you and your friend as players than it does about one of you being lucky in matchmaking and the other not. Just spitballing here, but if he's more experienced in other shooters than you are, then that will carry over to Apex even though you both came to the game at the same time.
The kills will come in time, but I'd say that you want to remember that kills are only a part of the story in battle royale. If you chase kills at the expense of learning awareness, game sense, team work, communication, etc., then you won't do yourself any real favors. A kill in this game is worth absolutely nothing unless it's the last one of the match.
