Timmy & Hal on the state of the game
Proving, at least to me, that they sort of get it. And they sort of don't.
They get that predator three stacks in ranked represent a problem to solo queue players. Hal's answer, to break out the lobbies by solo/duo/full stack, shows me that he doesn't understand the problems of a declining player base, or how this breakout would lead to longer queue times, or he just doesn't care about longer queue times. A point on which I'm fairly certain he's alone. Players say they'd be willing to wait longer for better matches, but every dev on the planet has data to prove that just isn't true over all. Which is why they all insist on 30 second max queue times no matter the cost in the quality of the match.
They both also see a content problem in the game. I see it too, though I'm not sure if we're really seeing the same problem at all. I see a lot of small changes (like the multiple pages of the season 23 update notes) that add up more to the appearance of change than to change itself. Personally, I don't need any change to speak of beyond a new map once in a while and maybe a new game type or two in a season. I'm not really clear on what kind of change the streamers and pros are looking for, but if I had to guess I'd say they're looking for the kind of change that has a label such as "Apex Legends 2," because that's what would drive their content numbers. Five year old games just can't bring people in like new titles can, risky though new titles may be. Can anyone speak to the population of PUBG or Fortnite? Sustaining or declining?
So big names are calling out problems with the game. Are they right or are they wrong? Is it helpful in the long term either way, or is it just another sign of inevitable decline?
