Well it might be the end for me.
Taken some time off and watched others play. My go-to streamer Mande started the new season solo ranked with KD of 68 after 5-6 games. And no, there is no dot in the number.
Wifey who also played yesterday had about a 15-20 matches without a single kill... She is average 1.0 KD gold player for years.
What I take from this is skill gap is just too big that I don't want to play because I know without trying that the game will not be fun for me.
Not playing Apex or any other online PvP is peaceful life. So rather I will be trying to beat my scores on aimtrainers and focus on PvE games.
Apex is the ultimate git guud game with no chill modes.
Ive said it multiple times. This game is not meant for average joes.
Even in likes of PUGB, CS, Fortnite you can play PvE but not in Apex.
Lets see.
For now I will take the spectator seat in Apex as the ALGS was awesome (NA west coast game times made it impossible to watch live but all in all the actual games were super entertaining).
Competitive multiplayer shooters always seem to suffer from a fun deficit after the initial novelty has worn off. It gets very grindy and very repetitive very fast. Even battle royale, which was meant to remedy those problems with more complexity. Bad matchmaking and armies of cheaters are the things we tell ourselves have ruined the game, but the truth is these games are a test of anyone's attention span and eventually patience wears out. I'm not quite there myself yet. But I've been feeling it inch up on me since season 14.
"Even in likes of PUGB, CS, Fortnite you can play PvE but not in Apex."
And that's the biggest rub of all for me.

I get what you mean re the novelty wearing off, but that's not what is making the game 'unfun' right now, at least for me. There was a definite change in the number of players that literally laser me down and can shoot dead on with no aim or recoil issues, seemingly from any distance since season 20. It's not the win or lose that makes a game fun, it's the being able to play it and participate and that is what is missing now.

Definitely agree that something changed in Season 20. It also isn't about winning or losing, but about how you win or lose and how frequently. The morphine drip of decent games dried up Season 20 and now it is just an endless stream of getting destroyed in humiliating fashion over and over again. - 2 years ago
Same feeling here, season 20 was the worst for me too. But that's just the peak, the degradation started at least 2 - 3 seasons ago.
Almost 90% of my games, on Xbox, were full of no-recoil/* aim and crouch spamming in this season. It always existed yeah but now it has reached a stupidly high amount of this *.
I struggled finishing it, only a few days before it ends and almost exclusively in mixtape farming painfully "play X times/do X damages with ..."
Haven't played a single game in season 21 and don't even planning to. Even thinking about finally uninstalling it. Season 20, 5 years, those are good numbers to finally end it all.
Anyway to answer the question, I think it started to die a few seasons back and that's why we only have all the cheaters/try harders left.
And that their communication seems less impactful and more discreet than a few seasons ago, that the solo finally returns only at this moment, like they no longer knew what to do to stimulate their game.
Of course, I mean dying in number of players, and healthy players. I think that economically on the other hand, with the whales, it can still live for a good while yet 😉- HappyHourSumwur2 years agoSeasoned Ace

S14 Hunted (Vantage's introduction) was absolutely horrible and looking back that was the start of the slide. Became really noticeable S18 and then just drove off the cliff S20, for me anyways.
- hayhor2 years agoHero@reconzero I find it interesting they haven't put in a PvE mode. Just the other day Mande posted a video where destroyer was back and he made all of the other players in the lobby go after Mande's team. Surely if a hacker can do it it can't be that hard to implement. Hell Divers 2 has showed how popular it can be. My son plays a mode in SWBF2 where you team with 3 others and fight cpu enemies.

Well, they actually let leak that they were working on a PvE mode a year or two back. Then publicly announced they were cancelling it. This was right around the time the mobile version came and went. Don't know if they were related in any way. But I take some hope from the fact that they adamantly insisted solos would never return and here it is. So there's presumably still hope for a whole list of things that were never supposed to happen.
