Alright so I think I may have figured the issue out on my own, but I'm looking for some confirmation and maybe a suggestion on a path forward towards a "real fix."
The main symptom I found to be the smoking gun was while looking at task "mangler", it appeared that my CPU usage was pegged at 100% but my GPU was sitting around 20-30%. With that, I figured I'd try to dial back the max FPS to 60 and my CPU wasn't going above 85% (at worst) while in game after that. I bumped it to 72fps (mainly because I have 144HZ) per recommendation of an article that I found elsewhere and that seems to be my sweet spot. I have a few cases where I see it go up to 100%, but I think it's relatively tolerable.
Now for the stab at the "real fix" - I think what can be concluded from this is that my CPU is holding back my GPU from doing what it's really capable of. However, will I notice much difference playing 72 FPS on a 144HZ monitor then if I had true 144 FPS? Real question, is it worth the upgrade to a processor I just bought in december of last year?
Thanks for posting. Whether a CPU upgrade is worth it or not really needs to be determined on an individual basis. How much performance do you need, what is your budget etc.
Also: task mangler 🙂
