I fixed this! I went into my router's advanced settings and turned on port-triggering (not forwarding). See screens:
Hi. Would you mind clarifying the settings you used for port triggering? I'm familiar with forwarding but not really with triggering.

I dont understand why it has to be so complicated and people have to change router settings or port forward to play together. Not everyone knows this tech stuff and its surprising that it is even necessary to do so just so we can play with our family/friends. I have tried almost everything in every thread/post that was recommended since release but if this is intended by the developers i wont go out of my way to use an expensive VPN or buy a new router. I hope this issue gets fixed so everyone can enjoy this otherwise awesome game.
