Cross platform play

I cant seem to sort my sons problem of cross platform play out. The setting is greyed out in apex although it is set to enabled.

I have checked all xbox settings, all are good (he plays fortnite with nintendo friends). I have checked all EA settings and can't see anything in his account that stops this.

I have re installed apex but still the same issue.

He is desperate to play with friends, please help!
