Cheap thermal paste can wear out faster if sustained under really high temps.
I suggest only using bios fan profiles as software can be tempermental.
If you disabled vsync then it could have caused it to escalate to this, or it could be dirt/ dust in your laptop fans.
If your laptop if dirty in that way turn it off and use a vaccum against the air intakes and exhausts.
If Asus support was not much help and you are comfortable replacing thermal paste; i can suggest some TIM.

I average 50 - 70 fps on PUBG and Cod Warzone...
Both are on low graphics
I triyed everything possible (all the thing you mentionned on this topic) : updated my drivers (with geforce experience), put the turbo mod ON (with Armory app), changed setting on "prioritize maximum performance"... nothing changed...
I know i don't really help with my comment but it more like a advice for everyone looking to buy this laptop... don't to this mistake !!
I bought it for 2000$ and i will get a refund to get a deskop computer with better settings (rtx 2080 super and i7 9700 k)
And by the way it not normal to do some changes on the laptop to get the performance normally we should have.... terrible move by Asus on this...
