Microstuttering

I get microstutters in apex which is driving me crazy. I just noticed, that if I cap my FPS to 30 temporarily with config and and then change it back to the original fps cap of 265; the game is buttery smooth for 4 secs then back to microstuttering.

I've checked, I have no overheating on GPU nor CPU. I've once managed to get the game to stay buttery smooth, back then the problem was AfterBurner running on background and disabling all the options helped. I've done that now but I really don't know what to do anymore, if someone has any solution, please help.

The frames stay nicely at 265 without any drops, but still there is stutters which I cannot explain.

Specs:
i9 9900k @ 4.8,
RTX 3070,
16gb 3200mhz RAM,
500gb 2.5 samsung ssd

I have tried to set the CPU affinities as well, so that most of the background tasks are running on 0-1 cores and game is on 2-15
GPU is on MSI mode with priority on High
Drivers: 528.49 (because 530 onward there has been problems with FPS and this is best one so far for apex. When I accidentally fixed it, I had this same driver)
On a note, I am running RTSS to cap the FPS - despite it adding 1 frame of delay.
Hyperthreading is enabled, without it I was running 100% CPU usage sometimes on apex

There is a random spike, which I cannot explain why it happens

Seems that the frame time randomly drops to 2.7ms

Then same instant jumps to 4.9ms
I do want to mention that I have on Nvidia reflex: On + boost

Please help, I really don't know what to do anymore to fix this.. All suggestions welcome.. (Including EA fixing this issue, since this happens only on Apex)

  • Disable anything that limits fps you shouldn't need it on something that powerful.

This includes VSync or FreeSync. These things are typically good for when you want to have good looking graphics and don't care about drop in fps or input delay. However in a game like Apex those lost frames or input can mean a huge difference in a fight that lasts about 1 second, but I do get that since you do have a high tier station it shouldn't matter right ? Well unfortunately for apex it does so I would try there first disabling those features in game.

Also wouldn't hurt to play the game at lower settings the game seems to always have performance issues every patch and bugs that pop up every time.  I also play at 165 Hz 144 Hz is fine too but I prefer 165 at 100fps solid.

@Aurabliss Yeah I have everything on low. Including LOD bias +3 set from nvidia profile inspector to get better fps. Without G-sync I get even worse microstutters so can't do that...
  • The thing with vsync and fps limiter is they will alter your screen refresh rate on the fly to stabilize fps rates meaning it could also be your monitor going bad too..

so what happens is for it to stable the fps its lowering the Hz of you monitor to 60-70-120-144 to obtain stable fps this is whats more than likely causing the micro shuttering.

Also are you 100% sure you disable all parts of vsync everywhere ?  when you do this also includes fully disabling it on the launcher properties too when launching the game..

I will be back later though I have to go to work here.

    @Zeelmaekers Hello,

I have it on 1000hz, I tried setting it to 500hz with no luck.

Weirdly enough, when I plugged in a ps4 controller and moved around - the microstutters were gone...? But soons as I start looking around with MnK its back..

Surely there is a reasonable explanation to this?

I have it disabled everywhere, if I had v sync enabled, I would notice it - I am very sensitive to input lag and vsync causes a lot of it..

  • Test key board and mouse separately see if same thing happens with either one and take note what usb its plugged into.

Could be an hardware issue between the two or a faulty usb port.

    Hey @Cappilos

I did some googling and that specific mouse seems to cause stuttering when low latency mode is active.
Could you check if the issue is gone when you change the option in your NVIDIA control panel ?

    Hello @Zeelmaekers

That did not help. Every other game is fine even with reflex boost enabled.
Seems that this has been added to Apex legends Trello board and is under investigation: https://trello.com/c/IfXI1PCa/378-playing-at-165-fps-may-cause-stuttering-during-some-gameplay-scenarios

Let's hope it's fixed properly and game is more optimized in the future. I don't mind if I have to wait a longer time for this to be fixed - I will take a break from this game until performance issues has been resolved.

    Thanks for helping.
