Re: Frame rate drops down when moving mouse

It does sound very much like a mouse polling/report rate issue. I don't know the sciences and maths behind it but it strikes me as more of a confusion of responses between the refresh rate of the monitor, game and mouse... Or something like that. But it's more complicated than raw power, I was having this issue with a variety of games for a while until I dropped my mouse polling rate down. Sometimes it can be caused by something obtuse like too many inputs being connected at once, leading to conflicting instances of HID-Compliant device drivers in your device manager. It's one of those silly PC-centric issues where you think more is better but it doesn't shake out that way.

One thing you can do quickly is if you have a bunch of input devices connected (like extra mice, keyboards or gamepads) you could unplug them, restart your PC and give the game another go to see if that helped. It may not work, or you may be asking "well why would I have all that extra stuff connected ya big doof?!"  And to that I would say fair enough!

But I still think it's a mouse polling/report rate issue!

Just as an aside, mouse polling/report rate is separate from DPI!

You can check it using this link:

https://zowie.benq.com/en/support/mouse-rate-checker.html

(This should work with any screen, not just Benq!)

Swipe your cursor around the screen as fast as possible and watch the numbers on the right side of the screen. The highest number on the list is your polling/report rate.

If it's 250 or less it's probably not be the issue, if it's 500-1000 this may be the problem.

How you would fix this depends on the brand of your mouse. For the most part it would require its software, I don't think there's an easy way to change it in Windows. If it's a Logitech mouse for instance you would need their Logitech Gaming Software (https://support.logitech.com/en_us/software/lgs) jump into settings and look for 'Report Rate.' Set it to 250. It might still work OK at a maximum of 500 but for the best overall compatibility and performance 250 is a better choice.

500 should be fine for most games but a surprising amount of games recommend 250, some games may be fine with 1000 but some really don't like it.

Maybe this will help, I'm sorry if it doesn't, and I hope your issue gets sorted out soon!

Thank you for the solution and explanations! I'll try it as soon as I get home.
But there's still something: my report rate is 500 based on the default settings where you suppose it to be fine, and, in addition, I noticed that when I'm using trackpad the fps doesn't drop. What would you think of this?

The trackpad not causing it leans even further towards the usb interupts and polling rate to me. 500 still affected me I've run 250 ever since cod4 since I got used to it. The difference is like a single millisecond, for half the amount of interrupts on the cpu. There is far more lag in the pipeline than that making it pretty insignificant. All I can think is give it a go to rule it out.
  • Hmm. I just plugged in a keyboard with a trackpad and used the mouse rate checker to see what it would report. I zig zagged around the screen as frantically as possible and found that I could only get it to report up to 75 or so. It may be the combination of that lower report rate and that it's not using the USB like the mouse is, so the USB interrupt issue combined with a high report rate starts to sound likely...

If you're mouse is currently set to 500 drop it down to 250, it's the most common report rate for mice and the standard for most games anyway. I would still double check it with the mouse rate checker just to make sure it's set. It may also be worth doing the same with trackpad just to compare it's report rate to the mouse.

Here's the mouse rate checker link again, it might have formatted weird in the last post. Just swipe your cursor around the screen as fast as possible and watch the numbers on the right side of the screen.

@UnderTakerPwn Same issue for me. Made a new installation of Windows 10, fixed my problem. Than I installed Origin and before I downloaded anything, the issue was back.
I think origin has a problem with the latest update.

I have tried literally anything that's humanly possible. The problem is not only in-game, it is also affecting my system in general after installation of the origin client right away. Rn i have a clean Win10 install, with no performance issues at all in any game. I refuse to install origin aagain in the next few weeks, as it is my only working troubleshoot to prevent this from happening again. Very sad, because i loved Apex so much.

@AufsichtsPflicht oh I see. Well, Apex Legends is supposed to be out on Steam soon™. And it will not require to install Origin to play. Make sure you link your Origin account to Steam beforehand though.
  • @ekze Awesome. I didn't spend money on apex. So it's not that bad of a loss if I couldn't keep my legendary skins. But I have other games on Origin too. (Which cost real money) but because of their broken/malicious client I lost those.
  • @Dnaldaeh Thanks ! Your post, help me with my problem in Cyberpunk 2077. 🙂 And the problem was.... the 8 000 Hz polling rate for my mouse. (Corsair) Now, it's buttery smooth !
