I don't think that is the issue as i have had msi afterburner open and closed and i'm still not able to get the overlay working

If you have MSI afterburner on your computer, check if NVIDIA Shadowplay that is blocking or RivaTuner.
RivaTuner was the problem for me@Pascomania thank you for this... it worked but now i can't use MSI??? kind of annoying.
you can still use msi, just gotta remember to have it closed completely when starting up apex. once you have apex running through the origin launcher, and the ingame overlay is working, THEN you can open msi afterburner and minimize like usual and leave the on screen display up like usual.
Yeah its riva tuner. If you turn "application detection level" to off it works fine when you restart the game but if you have limited your frames using the tuner, it no longer limits the frames in game.
