This does sound like your account was linked to a different EA Account than you'd been playing on previously, which would be the reason your progress had changed.

If you don't recall or no longer have access to the original email that was used, it would be best to contact support directly.

They'll need to go over some account information with you to try and track down that prior account so it can be re-linked here, thanks!
