Health of the tank is irrelevant if I'm not in it.
Even if I manage to re-enter the tank what's the point? I'd have taken a massive risk, provided a sitting target and the tank still took damage.

You take massive risk, i take massive one shot.
EDIT: Also i take massive risk when i drop altitude low so i could hit bombs. Good food for recoiless users, which is again one shot.
Being " fair " in a " war " game is difficult. Everything is about " how can I take you down ? How fast, safe and easy can I do it ? ". I mean, fairplay by respecting other players, avoid cheating or exploit, is the way to go. But the gameplay cannot be fair here, and if we want a fair game, then we'll all end up playing the 1911 as Maria Falck. The more weapons, vehicules, specialist, maps and so options we have, the more unfair things will happen.
Railgun tank is a danger for pilots, so are light armored vehicules, recoiless, jets, tornado, ground, water and buildings. When you get one shot by a building, is there any question about if it's fair or not ? Then why asking if it's fair or not for a light armored heli to get one shot by a vehicule that is specialized in taking down vehicules ? Railgun tank is powerfull against other vehicules, but very poor against infantry and can be destroyed very fast, very easy. Taking down a railgun tank with stealth heli is easy. You can equip missiles, shooter can IEM them, and you can bomb them. Also, you can fly way above their maximum angle at medium/short range, and never get hit by their main gun.
I think the enemy railgun knew what they were doing, waiting there for an aircraft to spawn and take it down immediatly. Or they were very lucky to spot you. I don't think this kind of play is fair, but this is not about the tank. This is about fairplay, and the spawn mechanics. You can't avoid playing with people that will abuse this kind of weakness, and the best way to fix it is indeed a short immunity to vehicules spawning at the base, giving you enough time to prevent and dodge those railguns sniper waiting for you.
Oh, and yes I fly. I fly a lot. A lot more than playing the railgun tank. I'm sorry but, please understand what you are playing when you get into an aircraft.

They cannot affect anyone while in spawn. As it is, you will find AT LEAST 1 armor in spawn, 5 seconds in, raining down unlimited fire on locations. If you make that invulnerable, nobody would leave spawn.
Spawn killing has been an issue in just about every MMOG. Here is how you fix the zone
- You take no damage while inside the zone
- You can do no damage or affect game play while in zone
- once you leave zone, you cannot reenter zone.
These 3 qualifications give a player a chance to get in game

The Railtank just needs damage drop off with distance. It should not be able to one-shot helos from spawn to spawn, that is silly. It should have a max effective range, then a damage drop off as the projectile slows down.

How do you avoid spawn traps with those mechanics?
