Footstep audio since 5.0

Ok I'm a BF vet. Purchased EVERY main BF gamed since Bad company 2 (even though I didn't play bf1 and bfv because I dislike the timeframe... I still purchased them to show love to the company though)

I am a 3.1 kd primarily infantry oriented player. So I have enough of a skill cap as to see more clearly where issues are. Here I am ignoring every other gripe that I have example "dying to invisible players over and over again as of late" or "Dark areas being too dark and bright areas being too bright" etc etc and will be focusing on 1 thing that seems like a silly move by devs but the more I look into it it seems like they are trying to "fix a problem that keeps moving around."

The footstep audio has all but vanished for me since 5.0 where before 5.0 it was LITERALLY the best footstep audio I have experienced in YEARS. So I came here ready to explode about "HOW COULD YOU CHANGE SOMETHING THAT WAS SO GOOD AND MAKE IT SO BAD?!" I thought it was the new dice just in typical new dice fashion destroying things for the lols. But before I posted I searched up "footstep audio" here to see if anyone else was pissed... But no one else is... Instead I found old posts about poor footstep audio dating back MONTHS! So instead of being mad I have decided to try to help in any way a dummy like be can. Here goes.

For the last 6 months or more My footstep audio was crystal clear to the point that my friend group keeps being amazed of the things I call out. So may be its setup based. So here's mine.

I rock a Hyper x Cloud 2... The usb dongle is called the Hyper X AMP...

IN WINDOWS I have it set to 7.1 In the windows sound drivers... AND (this is important) "Noise equalization" ON with the slider all the way to the left. I have the "virtual surround" button on the dongle set to ON.

IN GAME I have the audio set to 3D headphones.

(Note the reason I was stressing on the "loudness equalization" is because it changed around the audio experience in COD for me. Went from airstrikes blowing my eardrums out and no footsteps to hearing footsteps in houses across the street and bearable airstrike sounds. AKA it helps a lot)

The footstep audio has been the best footstep audio of ANY game I have played over the last few years and with the steady decline in my eyesight (keratoconus) I found my self relying WAY more on the audio... Then 5.0 rolls around and now I cant hear a dang thing. (my friends say I'm nuts but I swear I could hear the difference between enemy footsteps and friendly ones) So I hope you understand my frustration.

Since 5.0 I have tried every combination like turning off virtual surround... setting it to stereo... in windows and game... turning off loudness equalization war tapes, midnight mode, etc etc etc. All result in even worse audio mix. Some make footsteps disappear entirely other make vehicle audio vanish.

I hope this helps even a tiny bit... (please revert the audio stuff till its figured out.)

@Skitzotech With your logic, installing wall hack is also not cheating.

Enhancing footstep audio means you can hear people way before they can hear you.

    @VOLBANKER_PC

Buying an expensive headset means you can hear better than the average player so... CHEATING!

Buying a keyboard whose buttons have a higher actuation point than others means... CHEATING!

Buying a controller with a lower latency radio means.... .... CCCCCHEATINGGGGG!

Now that I got the "making fun of the babies" its time for the serious part. I'm done talking to trolls here... all of you will be ignored from this point forward. Only the ones who have ACTUAL input will be paid any mind.

  • @SkitzotechI've generally never had issues with footstep audio in 2042.

Its vehicle / ambient noises that are the issue for me. Tanks rolling up on you, helis flying overhead, random explosions going off. Sometimes engine just doesn't render them for whatever reason. Doesn't happen all the time, but when I does, I notice it.

I do have somewhat of a beefy audio setup though with Audio Technica ATH-R70X and FiiO K5 Pro + I'm using Dolby Atmos for custom audio preset

@Skitzotech   If you play with good headphones, you can hear things better _but the relative volume between loud and soft sounds is the same_ . That’s the difference, and that’s what’s important.

With good headphones you can still only crank up the volume ever so far because otherwise explosions become so loud they rip your hearing apart 🙂 This limits how audible footsteps will be for you no matter what headphones etc. you’re using.

With your audio enhancement you can crank up the volume much more because loud sounds are reduced in volume. And since low sounds are already boosted in volume from the start with your audio enhancements, footsteps become “extra extra” much easier to hear for you.

@SkitzotechYou can use Sonar and other applications that are often just an equaliser, which reduces "other frequencies" than footsteps. Whether that is cheating is not for me to decide.

But still, my main issue is the inconsistent sound. Footsteps are sometimes not working at all and vehicles are a total joke (as others have stated).

Personally I use DTS Headphone X (combined with very neutral headphones). Dolby Atmos is ok, but is more 'Hollywood blockbuster movie' than DTS. I find DTS more neutral (frequency-wise) and has better positional audio, which makes footsteps sound clearer than using Atmos (or Windows sonic), this is probably mostly because of a less bassy sound in DTS (and Sonic has too much reverb).

In your footage there are no vehicles. Footsteps are mostly a problem when combined with nearby vehicles, the audio mix becomes very "muddy" at times.

  • Sound is broke always has been.
BFV (and previous BFs) had better positioning.
No settings you make change the fact that tanks/inf/helis often make no sound.
Footsteps have zero vertical positioning, this just isn't there and can't be recovered via EQ.
It is a fundamental issue with the game.
    Your k/d won't change that :D

  • @Skitzotech I’ve been playing with the sound settings. I’ve got a GSP350 Sennheiser, which has its own dongle with preset EQ settings (Music, Esports, Game). Game is way too much base when mixed with war tapes. It’s great, but no good if you want to hear footsteps. The tornado sounded fantastic though. After trying a bunch of different settings, Esports combined with 3D Headphones provided the best clarity of sound, so loud doesn’t equal good. Having the Dolby setting also amps up the base, and footsteps are more clear with it off, but the overall game sounds better with it on so I am sacrificing one aspect for the greater good. If I was doing comp I’d turn Dolby off too. I wish both the headset and the game had a wider variety of audio choices to choose from, but we have to work with what we got, right?
  • I have made no changes to the audio settings and I usually play with a youtube video or a podcast in the background but even with that the footsteps are way too loud.

I only have a stereo headset but I can still pinpoint exactly where people are just with sound.

There is no need for a minimap with theses footsteps, but I think they have been quieter since update 5 but that's still too much.

    @ugdpy

Your sound setup would help us to see where we need to be as far as sound settings.

    Thx.

EDIT: Added my setup for clarification.

    Audio Technica ATH M50X

    Creative G6 USB audio.

Using headphone 3d sound in game.
