Some people are missing the point of your post. As far as I am aware the only way to make it close to the custom game modes in bf3/4 that came close to milsim is in Portal though Portal is slowly drowning
I agree about some missing the point as well as Portal being about the only way to recreate a more milsim-like Experience in this game especially given there is no hardcore option.
As for Portal slowly drowning, I think you're right as far as getting more people to engage with it due in no small part to the whole progression fiasco. For folks like my friends and I though who are really only interested in coop with the past title's assets, it hasn't been a major roadblock for us enjoying the game.
Having said that, BF isn't what I would consider "milsim" in any way to be honest. Sure, you can make it more hardcore and folks like Karmakut have succeeded in Portal making a pretty fun, hardcore, "milsim-like" experience. In fact @RiffLife81 , that is the server I would suggest joining if he is still hosting them.
As far as console being being slim on milsim choices, that's true but I'm surprised no one has mentioned (unless I missed it) Hell Let Loose. That is about as hardcore as they come and what I would consider leaning heavily toward milsim. .....great game but it has a steep learning curve. It also requires communication to get any enjoyment out of it.
Sure, we also have Insurgency Sandstorm but also titles like DayZ which is still an ARMA game set in a post apocalyptic world. ....and yeah, zombies. However, it is still milsim mechanics at its core and played where communication is key and real world tactics are relevant.
IMO, there is a renaissance of sorts coming to console in regard to the milsim / hardcore genre. There are already several upcoming milsim / hardcore titles that are in development not only for PC but also for console. ....and others devs are now looking to port to console like DayZ, I:S and HLL. I believe there is a market for it as do (apparently) these smaller studios.
