- @HillbillyJohn I dont think that is true. If its on the PS5 your locked to the PS5 version. I could be wrong..
- @smudgegard This is a HUGE SHAME for EA. Just spoke with them on twitter and they said you can play against pc and Xbox last version. But not Xbox old version and PS4. This is ridiculous. I'm cut out from most of my friends as they are still ps4. I purchased the game to play with them mainly, and I'm not able to do so.
I want a refund for this beta-like game. 90£ for a beta-like fully bugged uncompleted crap game and you can't even play with your friends. SHAME. Now they came back on the chat on twitter saying "But if you do have the game on PS5, you should be able to connect to the PS4 version in order to play with your friends. You can see more info here: https://help.ea.com/en/help/battlefield/battlefield-2042/fight-for-your-future-in-battlefield-2042/ "
this is a joke.. i will keep you posted.- Trokey664 years agoSeasoned Ace@VinM91 If you bought the game on PS5, it comes with the PS4 version. Load into that and you can play with your PS4 friends through that on PS5.
Don't panic, progression will not be lost. - HillbillyJohn4 years agoSeasoned Veteran@smudgegard The PS4 version is backwards compatible on the PS5.
@Trokey66ok found it. i can download both versions. so will need to run the ps4 version to play with them, and ps5 to play alone on the 128players servers and so on

Initially, you had to buy the one of premium editions (Gold, etc.) to get the cross-gen bundle which includes both versions. ....PS4 and PS5. However, EA changed their minds after a lot of backlash and included the cross-gen bundle in the Standard Edition too. It's in the product descriptions on the PS Store.
You can't play with friends on PS4 while in the PS5 version. You have to be in the PS4 version to do so which comes with the PS5 copy of the game.

The problem is you have to use 2x the harddrive space just to play with last gen console users. It's a real kick in crotch for PS5 and series s users with their limited SSDs.
- Trokey664 years agoSeasoned Ace@VinM91 Exactly, you've got it!

this is a joke.. i will keep you posted. If you bought the GOLD or the ULTIMATE edition for your PS5, then you are also able to download the PS4 version of the game for your PS5. And that gives you option to play with your PS4 friends in the PS4 BF2042 universe. And subsequently then also the ability to crossplay with the Xbox One players there.
- @xXHappy_PuppyXx Exactly. This really is not an acceptable solution.
Past Battlefield titles have had different versions of the maps in the same game (64 player, 32 player, etc). Why doesn't BF2042? Why does the PS5 version not also have the 64 player maps included? Then PS5 players could queue up for the 64 player versions with their PS4 friends and not have to swap executables.

Because it is blatantly wrong!
And a callout to the relevant EA staff supervisor(s) would be in order, as such misinformation to customers is a disaster!!!
I have the GOLD Edition of the game for PS5, and with that I also play with my PS4 friends in the game!
With the GOLD or ULTIMATE Editions, you paid for and got the cross-gen option, which gives you access to download and play the two different games. Both the old-gen version and the new-gen version. I have personally both installed at the same time and they both work fine.
So there is your answer to the OP question number 2.
For the first question, yes that is a functionality that we have pleaded for to become implemented, as we on PS5 consoles would enjoy also to play together with our friends on the new-gen Xbox consoles!

Again, the Cross-Gen Bundle is included in the Standard Edition as well. ....not just the Gold and Ultimate.

Oh great @Kean_1111 , I didnt follow that they had added it to all versions now after I made my initial purchase. 👍
btw, how does it run on the PS5?
Asking for a friend.

Yeah, they caught so much flak for it that they changed their mind not long after. ....but you're right, it wasn't that way initially.
Most of my friends are still on PS4 so I would have had to buy those premium editions if I wanted to play with them. I was ready to say forget it as I already was only interested in Portal and it just wasn't worth it in my case. I'm ok with $69.

Then PS5 players could queue up for the 64 player versions with their PS4 friends and not have to swap executables. The PS5 version of BF2042 is optimized for PS5. It doesn't use the limited, backward compatibility aspects you get in some PS4 versions of games.
@Kean_1111What does that have to do with it? I have the PS5 version of Avengers and can play with my PS4 friends without swapping executables. You play on the same maps with the same characters, each optimized for the system they run on. Pretty sure COD works the same way. There's no gameplay additions to the PS5 version of BF2042 other than map size.
- xXHappy_PuppyXx4 years agoRising Ace@ArchAngeL-PCX They do have the same maps, the solo/ coop are 64 player versions and portal has all the smaller maps as well.
It makes no sense why they did this to the community. @xXHappy_PuppyXxI agree, it makes no sense at all. Portal at the least should be cross gen playable. That alone would be huge since its very likely many will just stay in Portal where there's a lot more maps and variety.

I'm not familiar with the Avengers game but as I understand it, that was a PS4 title where they later offered a PS5 enhanced update, right? This is common for a lot of games where they use the PS5's backward compatibility Boost abilities to achieve better graphics, frame rates, etc. It essentially provides more benefits to PS5 owners of PS4 titles than just backward compatibility. They are not next gen, PS5 developed games though.
Unless something has changed (and maybe it has), I don't know of any games developed exclusively for next gen (at least in the case of PS5) that will allow cross-generational play. However, I do know there are games that are developed for PS4 with PS5 enhancements where both platforms can play together. There is a difference there though and which is why I'm guessing DICE had to provide two copies for PS5 players.
- BFB-Praetorian4 years agoSeasoned Veteran@CyberDyme How are you finding the differences between PS4 and PS5?
From a technical, map design and game play perspective is one ahead of the other?
I'm playing 2042 on trial while I make my mind up whether to buy or wait for a sale so no PS4 access unfortunately to compare the two.

I'm playing 2042 on trial while I make my mind up whether to buy or wait for a sale so no PS4 access unfortunately to compare the two.Hey @BFB-Praetorian ,
That is actually a very interesting question! 👍
Now maybe I am just an old silly man? But somehow the classic maps in the Portal appear somehow to me to have a better balance and gameflow of things with the reduced number of players.
And for the PS4 / Xbox One world, especially on the smaller map sizes in the BF2042 Core areas, it is very very obvious the difference, as its like we have more close combat and strategy involved in the gameplay. It is like the full 128 player gameplay on the bigger maps on PS5 world are almost getting too chaotic and thereby I loose some of the intriguing and challenging things I personally like in the BF gameplay.
Namely the dependency on squad and teamwork, strategy, collaboration etc. But now it still looks like some of those collaboration-enabling features are broken in the game, so maybe if they get fixed, it will become better in the 128-player games?
Another aspect of the 128-player games, the maps still look awfully big and deserted for the most part. Spending a lot of valuable game time just by running or commuting in a vehicle to find a battle somewhere, when all has been wrapped up in one sector or we got exterminated there...
Technically and scenery etc, then they both appear to work the same and also broken in the same way. I cannot say with 100% certainty, as we have no server browser, but I do feel somehow that the lag/rubberbanding/bullet sponging is worse on the 128-player PS5 version of servers.
I noticed in the portal, that we have easily access to servers with a ping rate over 200 milli seconds, which may explain those poor gameplay experiences, if too many high-ping players on the same server as you? Personally I only join servers listed having below 100 milli seconds in ping.
But how do we even know whereto EA ports us onto BF2042 Core game servers, where our ping is maybe 200ms or higher???
We don't, because we have no server browser or insights there...
I was watching bits of a livestream from Karmakut yesterday and this morning. It was interesting because he was saying the same thing about the player population. He found lower numbers were actually more conducive to the hardcore / milsim Experience he and his followers were trying to achieve. After watching parts of the stream of them testing on the fly, I have to agree. It's sort of like you described.
- @Kean_1111 True. Avengers is a PS5 upgrade. There aren't many games exclusive to PS5, but those that are doing things that only are possible on PS5. The rifts in Ratchet and Clank for instance are not possible on PS4. Returnal and Ratchet are making heavy use of the Dualsense features as is Astrobot. I didn't see anything like that on the PS5 beta for BF2042.
IDK They made a PS4 version of this game. Given that COD Vanguard is also cross gen, it seems like they didn't use much foresight here.
