Sunk Cost vs Fool Me Twice
I think it was an absolute mistake for DICE to abandon development on BF2042. I know they think BF2042 is a sunk cost and no amount of development work will save it. But this is twice now that DICE has not fulfilled their promise to produce a live service game.
Given the almost complete lack of bug fixes / content for the past 6 months, let's say 95% of their team is working on the next battlefield to be released in 2024. When BF7 comes around, Battlefield 2042 will still remain a monument to their broken promises. By then there will be zero good will left from the community to help with BF7 sales, and it will bomb hard and be the last tombstone to the franchise.
The only way to save the franchise is to make BF2042 a good game. My friends and I either preordered BF2042 or bought it immediately on release based on DICE's previous successes such as BF3, 4, and Bad Company. Right now DICE's reputation is in the gutters, and NO AMOUNT OF FUTURE MARKETING will get the fan base to pre-order BF7 like it happened for BF2042. I still want to enjoy the franchise, but most of us will now wait for a proper review of BF7, and that will bring down the sales numbers.
It is absolutely insane for the game that had the biggest opening sales of the franchise to be abandoned after one month. The game was absolutely abandoned because critical bugs since release were not fixed until 5 months later, and the some of the SAME BUGS STILL affect a small percentage of players.
Unless BF2042 is brought to a good state (and not at the pace it is currently going), DICE is not going to fool anyone when they start marketing BF7.
