What Does 2042 Network Graph Mean?

Hi Guys: I've been having issues when playing 2042. It just locks-up, stutters. Sometimes it plays very well, but not often. Anyway, I displayed the network graph and the bar. When this happens it becomes obvious because the graph just goes off the map. There's different colors in the graph related to different things. I just don't know how to read them.  Make note of the red packet icon in the upper left corner. Anybody got any ideas I'd love to have a conversation with you. Thanks

  • Here's a post explaining what the abbreviations mean in the netgraph. I can further explain what everything means in the netgraph if you have any questions.

Stutters are usually caused by CPU or RAM issues. Posting a DxDiag report with your computer specs will help us with troubleshooting.

Press the ~ key and type the following command into the console for more CPU and GPU performance graph information.

In the link below I post about how to use Windows Task Manager to see if any CPU cores are maxing out and causing stutters.

Hello: Thanks for the reply. If you saw my screenshots you know what I have going on. I guess what I'm trying to figure out though is what those lines actually mean. I've read what the game says they mean. I suppose the question is my machine not up to the job or is it my connection to the servers? Which is what the graph means. Is the graph showing the actual "network"? What is the red packets icon showing-up in the upper left corner when it happens? Interestingly, I just got off a 3 hour session of 2042 playing my own custom servers I've put together with the portal function and the rules editor. The game played flawlessly. The graph, smooth and steady. Game settings on high, However, that was at 2am this morning. No doubt very few people online using bandwidth I'm trying to get, right? One, that tells me that my machine and your game are not the issue. That's why I need to know what that graph actually means. Also interestingly when I play and I have game windowed with the task manager showing and it locks-up or stutters I see the ether performance graph goes to zero kbps on the send side I think. Here's the caveat. My system isn't the newest. So I know it would be easy to just say "the machine is too old, get a better machine". Keep in mind that my machine played 2042 at a moderate level with the old GPU. The system is MSI Z87 -65GD -Gaming MB, I7-4790K CPU clocked at 4 gig. 32 gigs DDR3 RAM clocked at 2400MHZ. The MB is 12 years old. The new addition has been the GPU upgrade to Radeon RX 9060 XT, 16 gig DDR6 RAM. Old GPU was Radeon RX 6600 XT, 8 gigs DDR4. This machine will play perfectly every other version of BF anytime, anywhere. Ok, so that's why I've spent a great deal of time tweaking the game setting, and display settings. But like clockwork the issue persists. When it's happening it's 5 sec. running, 5 sec. freeze, like clockwork. Then when it played perfectly this morning, display and game settings are at 2560 x 1440 @ 144hz. I have FPS limited to 75. If I were to try to play now here in Medford OR at like 10am the game would "vapor-lock". But this morning at 2 -5am the game will play terrific. When I see it happen, which is all the time during the day, I can see in the system display that neither the GPU or CPU are maxed-out. The system has 48 gigs of RAM, only about 18 gigs total being used when I play. So having said all that how should I interpret what the graph is clearly showing?

Likewise hope we meet in the field of battle. BTW, 2042, IMHO is excellent. I've played BF in all it's forms since day one. I've played all the COD games Not comparable. I call COD the SRSD game (spawn run shoot die). Isn't it funny there is so many "expert" critics about 2042 out there. I guess it's easy to pick on the big dumb kid at school (-;  Let me know what you think.

Stutters are caused by a CPU core maxing out at 100%. They're not caused by network issues. I'll be happy to help diagnose any network issues, but first lets make sure none of the CPU cores are hitting 100% usage.

Here's how to check if any CPU cores are maxing out. Your CPU has 4 cores and 8 threads. You need to check all 8 cores in Windows Task Manager to see if any of the 8 CPU cores are maxing out.

It only takes 1 out of the 8 CPU cores hitting 100% to cause a game stutter!

To see if any CPU cores are hitting 100% usage in Windows Task Manager.

    • Run the game in windowed mode (alt + enter)
    • Open Task Manager (alt + ctrl + del)
    • Set Task Manager to 'always on top' by clicking Options on the toolbar.
    • To see CPU usage per core in Windows Task Manager, open the Performance tab, then right-click on the CPU graph and choose "Change graph to > Logical processors".

Now you can play the game and monitor per core CPU usage. If any CPU core hits 100% usage the game will stutter. This is important because it only takes one CPU core hitting 100% usage to cause the game to stutter.

Thanks for the reply.  Here's 2 screenshots. One is of the CPU graph while playing 2042 the other is while playing BF V.

Give you a guess which one is 2042. Looks like in 2042 at that time at least that all 8 cores are hitting 100% consistently. Interestingly when I had a lesser GPU installed (RX 6600 XT) 2042 played pretty much normal. Needless to say I couldn't turn the settings all the way up but the game played pretty normally. However, at times 2042 will play very good for extended periods. Then most of the time like someone just hit the switch the game locks-up and/or stutters. So is what you are saying is this upgraded GPU is now overwhelming the CPU which it did not do to this extent with the old GPU? Is 2042 that much more resource intensive than any of the previous BF's? Problem is I've already sold my old GPU )-:

Hello again. Take a look at this screenshot. I simply just changed display from 2560x1440 @ 144hz to 1920x1080 @ 120 hz. The game is still @ 2560x1440 @ 120hz all setting on high. 2042 ran pretty good in my own server but as you can see it's still using every bit of the 8 processors. But not quite 100%. I could no doubt shut down some processes in the task manager and free-up a little more CPU. Anyway looks like progress. Next getting on some 128 Conquest maps and see how she runs. Thanks for your help.

You are correct about the RX 9060 XT pushing the CPU harder than the RX 6600 XT. The reason is the RX 9060 XT can output a higher frame rate, and it's the higher frame rate that's pushing the CPU harder.

The saw tooth pattern in the CPU graph with a scope doesn't look normal. I'm not sure what's causing it but that's no doubt causing stutters in the game.
