Battlefield 6 vs Older Titles (What went wrong and what went better)
I am playing Battlefield since BF2 (I missed out on 1942, I didn't have a PC that could run it). My biggest addiction was BF2 Strike at Karkand back in the day, our community even modded it and made it with attack helicopters.
I hated BFBC2 to the guts because it massively consolized the game, removed the jets completely, vehicle combat was at its worst and classes reduced to only 4, no commander, no squad leader and health regeneration (THE THING I HATE IN EVERY GAME) was introduced. And you were not losing your current magazine upon reloading which was basically just like COD. Super small maps, no prone, quick knife (Cod again) and quick grenade (again COD). But BFBC2 was really good if you were playing it for Rush not Conquest.
And with BF3 my entire hope was restored to these series, with BF4 (well after its broken release) it just peaked to maximum and to this day I think it was the best game ever made in the series.
BF Hardline, I picked it up for 4$ and I gotta say it was actually amazing if only it was sold as an DLC because it gave me a lot of BF2 Special Forces vibes.
Battlefield 1.... Oh boy the only game I pre ordered in the entire series and I regretted the most. I know a lot of people disagree with me but that game was extremely fast phased, grenades had no pin pulling animation and they were throwing super fast, it was literally a COD game with super fast health regen + Conquest was removed and was replaced by 64 player deathmatch and losing team was being massively awarded with hilarious OP airships or trains which on some maps the train was literally immortal and game changer. Although it had the best immersion in the series but everything else about it was disaster to me and surprisingly I played Hardline even more than BF1.
Battlefield V.. well a typical disaster until the pacific patch came and it turned to probably my second favourite BF title mainly because it was massively rewarding squad play and there was no 3D spotting + No health regeneration and I dare to say it has the best vehicle combat and vehicle design in entire series. Every tank is different, every faction is different and you cannot just camp and shoot things you need to go refill the ammo and repair the tank.
BF2042, I sort of skipped this one entirely and picked it up for like 4$ somewhere just for the BF6 rewards. Well this game was just disaster to me, but there were a few things I really liked about it and I wish they had imported it to BF6 and they didn't, The crawl system which was in portal which downed players could crawl back to their friendlies to get revived. This was an amazing feature I wonder why it was not in the core game. And secondly the grenade was not a quick throw, you had to manually pull the pin and throw it just like old school games.
And finally Battlefield 6 which I have hope in it but at its current state I have mixed feelings towards it.
The Good:
- They returned on the correct path but not the correct point, for example vehicles are now spawned without drivers and vehicle stealing is a thing again for abandoned bases which is awesome.
- Almost 90% of assault and carbine guns have good recoil and you need to learn how to shoot with them unlike the COD M4A1 that is just laser beam for now.
- The Escalation mode is really good.
- Gun scopes and sniper scopes are really nice now.
- Land Vehicle combat is really good.
- Destruction is back.
The Bad:
- Classes are designed really bad, Assault is basically useless, any engineer with assault rifle is better than assault class with the useless injection and the useless gadgets.
- Forced character models.
- Air vehicles are terrible and have almost no modification. I mean in BF2 and BF3 and BF4 which are way older games we had proper Target Pod display for guided weapons, how come in BF6 the guided weapons are literally designed as they are for the most basic shoot'em up arcade game ever?
- The grenade throw has no animation and character just throws it so fast even faster than COD without even pulling the pin.
- Health regeneration is incredibly fast, this cancerous feature belongs to COD not Battlefield, we have medics here, we don't need auto regen either for vehicles or soldiers.
- No commander and no proper squad leader.
- Guns and vehicles having unrealistic names, I get it this is because of licensing but then it means we should get more guns but we don't even have 25% of what BF3 and BF4 offered at release.
The Ugly:
- Open gun system. This is just terribly bad, how come grenades are restricted to classes but guns are not? This is just questioning!
- Support is both medic and support, this is just really bad. Assault could easily be medic like before and support could be support and maybe it would give more reason to people to play as Assault.
- The challenges and assignments. It is "OKAY" to lock guns behind challenges and assignments but it is surely not fine at all to lock gadgets and I mean BASIC class gadgets behind extremely grindy progression.
- Gun attachments, the only thing I hated about BF3 and BF4 was the grind system for each single gun. In BFBC2 all attachments were unlocked for every gun based on level progression (the only good thing about that game). Just make the attachments global, the game is already 100 euros and it is bare bones. Unfortunately this game inherited the exact same grind progress of unlocking attachments of BF2042 for the guns.
Let me rephrase this in another way, Imagine in a few years BF goes on sale and you want to tell your friends to jump in who have not played it before. You will have new players in the game versus those who are playing from day 1 and they are massively outmatched by huge amount of unlocks like an MMORPG. This is one of the biggest problems of BF3 and BF4 as well, when I was bringing new friends to play it the massive amount of "situational" unlock requirements like playing a game mode that was dead (Squad death match for L85 in BF3) or similar stuff was compeltely blocking them from getting special items and guns. BF1 and BF V do not have such issue and I wonder why DICE went back from those designs...
- Extremely small and compact maps.
- No levolution at all.
- No default server browser. Matchmaking is not meant for BF, BF is meant to be played in sand box mode. I miss the days we had "vote the next map" in chat from BF3 and BF4 and Hardline. Or vote kick, the vote kick and live admin is the best anti cheat tool ever, the matchmaking system takes that away.
- Useless Portal mode, I really don't understand the point of portal in BF6. In 2042 it was meant to put two different eras up against each other but we don't even have that in BF6 and now even the XP gain is gone from Portal.
- This one is my biggest worry, the upcoming Battle Royal. I have a feeling with Battle Royal coming up and specially if it goes free to play, the entire design and balance decisions of the games might get affected by it and then we are down to the road of pleasing streamers and COD fanbase...
