My advice don't buy the game at this time, EA dev removed bots from Portal, you can't create a decent game with bots only, they put requirement of at least 8 people to join the game, before it's get populated with bots.
So you can't play solo at all.
The only game mode you can create in portal with bots, if you're good at programming, from scratch (not a template like breakthrough or conquest). I've seen few people created their own game modes with custom maps, custom rules and scripts, but it full of bugs and glitches that make everything into a broken game mode. And there's a need of new patches to fix the bugs.
I'm playing casual Breakthrough, that is populated with bots. The playthrough is good at times when there's no cheaters I enjoy the game.
But on weekends there's a lot of cheaters that can kill you instantly as soon as they see you, they use mouse and keyboard on game console that is connected through controller using a software that does aimbot, no recoil, unlimited ammo and who knows what. They are quick to put in you entire magazine in 0.01 sec you will not be able to respond at all.
You can play solo vs bots.

It just takes more work making a custom server. Those are solo start 47 bot servers.
