Feedback about Recon: it's a flawed class (and will be even worse at release)

First off, a little question. I bet you won't guess an answer.

What is Recon's best weapon class?

...

...

...

If you answered sniper rifle, you are dead wrong. If you answered DMR, you are even more wrong. These're not. The best weapon for a Recon is... a carbine. Or SMG.

Current design of a Recon seem to be in this weird position of "we need to have it in a game because all BFs had". His signature weapon doesnt work with gadgets and perks at all, neither does the overall game's design and pace. Because let's face it - Assault with a sniper rifle and carbine/SMG, and mobility, and 40mm nades, and Adrenaline, is far superior marksman class right now.

Currently, the only viable playstyle for the Recon, that seem to be pushed by the game's reality, meaning using his signature weapon and Lvl 2 perk, is to camp far far away and fish for headshots. Because with the new TTK, and the time ads take for a sniper rifle, aggressive playstyle is dead. Like, really dead-dead. Recon wont even manage to start glinting before AR or SMG rips him to shreds in any range below 50m.

DMRs are even worse - M39 needs 3 (three) headshots at any range, unless it's... 10m. Obviously, this weapon class also has ads time that will make you die of old age, or an AR. DMRs are dead in the waters, for any class, for this particular reason.

Pistol is laughable - not only the damage is reaaaaaally bad (but that's kinda expected), but the switch animation will kill you with the AR 4 bullets in 200ms TTK.

And what are the ranges that Recon wants to be in to use his kit? Close, practically on the frontlines. TUGS? Small AoE spot, best used just wall next to the enemy. UAV? Large AoE spot but... around the Recon. C4? Again, demands Recon to be face close (with a very long animation btw, especially juxtaposed against general TTK or nades). Beacon? Unless you play selflishly, as a headshot fishing **bleep**, you want to put it on the flanks. The same flanks you stand no chance with the sniper rifle, DMR, or pistol.

The real fun will start after release though - we know that already the best class in the game, and the best marksman in the game, will take Beacon away from the Recon. While Recon will get... wait for it... another frontline focused subclass. One that's almost useless at first glance (since no one ever hears any footsteps with all these explosions anyway, while sneaking without Beacon will be pointless to begin with).

So... dear Dice. Please, tell me. How is this class supposed to work? What is its ideal range? What playstyle Recon is supposed to have? If you want to disincentivize Recons from camping, to the point Recon loses his best gadget, why do you make the class unable to play aggressively with the signature weapon? If you want to tell me that after all these BFs I am expected to play Assault as well... you dont have to convince me anymore - I already started in this beta.

To provide a few solutions, aside from whining:
- If the Recon is supposed to be versatile class, its perk needs to be versatile as well - Kill Confirmed should be triggered for all weapons Recon can take

- UAV should be triggered at a position where Recon aims at

- Recon should not lose the Beacon. If you want to disincentivize the camping, it's already not going to work - campers will take Assaults anyway, for the Beacon (and all the other Assault bonuses, including the ladder - the wet dream of all the campers in any BF). Guess what, breath holding doesnt mean anything since it has never been used (outside of x40 gimmick shots at least), while faster rechambering will never outclass being able to climb and respawn in a good camping spot.

- You can alternatively slow down the game a bit, adding 200ms to all auto weapons TTK, so any other had a chance to shine

  • Finally someone mentions this useless class. The gadgets always carried scout/recon & there's really nothing good on the class in this game. Like you said, they get outgunned by everything in the game up to 50m

  • Recon class is good and not useless at all! It seems like a rage bait post, and it also looks like you don't know how to use it. I am personally using it, and I love it. I have seen lots of people doing great with it.
What is Recon's best weapon class?
It depends on the person. If he/she is good with sniper, then sniper, if assault/dmr, then that. It is not like the class is doing something with your weapon; rather, the class system is more or less related to the playstyle. So, don't embarrass yourself further and stop this nonsense.

  • In the beta the SVK was way better than the M39, it's not even a comparison. If I recall correctly, it was a 2 shot kill upto at least medium range. The M39 was balanced so poorly that I didn't even want to waste time playing it. It was by far the worst weapon in the beta.

DMRs are obviously not going to shine in maps that force close engagement distances. I'd like to think you choose a weapon based on the situation and not based on the class you pick.

I do agree that Recon has an identity crisis. It's not a new problem though, DICE has always struggled with balancing them correctly. The class is traditionally given lackluster gadgets or gadgets that do not align with their role.

Sniper rifles are fun, but they are generally completely useless from a competitive perspective. No matter how good you are at the game, picking an assault rifle will give you more kills and actually allows you to contest objectives. The sweetspot mechanic is honestly a bad mechanic, but it at the very least allows you to get more kills, if you do choose to stay at longer ranges.

I'd much rather have Recon be a saboteur, that's specialized in harassing the enemy. That's why I enjoyed Recon having access to C4 in Battlefield 4. A carbine, spawn beacon, smokes and C4 is really my preferred way to play the class

  • To be fair, the class balance is broken and BF was not meant to be an open weapons game. Recon has taken a hit but thats been the case for years now. I do agree with most of what you posted as most games want recon to play as a frontliner but with abilities, skills, and weapons of a long range class or vise versa. Yes you can change weapons to better fit the map but it doesn't change the fact that other classes are better at it

Wrote a post trying to fix this issue (it would make more sense if you red the post as this is only a porrion of it): https://forums.ea.com/discussions/battlefield-6-general-discussion-en/open--closed-weapons-and-classes-fix/12657837

RECON will change his signature gadget to “laser designator” (will function the same). Weapon effect will be “reconnaissance” (this will allow recon to change an choose 2 visual options out of 3 options night (hope), thermal, and regular vision). Signature trait will change to “in the zone” (longer and steadier breath control which helps keep your aim steadier). This class will focus on gathering information and relaying it to their team.

Gadgets will mostly be the same but with an addition; motion sensor, C4, decoy, drone, tracer dart gun, claymore, and flares (this will spot enemies and allies alike in the area for vehicles and mortar) enemies and allies hiding behind cover will not be spotted. Would like to add a EMP version for dart gun or just replace it since laser designator has become the signature gadget.

SNIPER will keep its ability as UAV overwatch (shadows over a 100 meter radius, enemy spotting for 60 sec). Initial skill will change to “camouflage” (snipers uniform will match the background color of the field, wear a ghillie suit). Next skill will remain as target acquired (inflicting dmg on enemies spots them, marking their position in world and mini map). Final skill will remain as confirmed kill (enemies can't be revived from a head shot by a bolt action rifle). This path will focus on trimming down enemies from long range.

SPEC OPS will keep its ability as UAV overwatch. Initial skill will change to “stealth tactics” (reduce sound unless standing, quicker takedowns with melee weapons, and reduce movement speed penalty while squading). Next skill will remain as gadget awareness (spot nearby enemy gadgets unless sprinting). Final skill will change to “covert ops” (equip thermal resistant clothing, this will cover the body but not the head. Player will remain completely visible in regular sights or night vision but will be harder to spot under thermal). This path will focus on stealth and maneuvering behind enemy lines.

Ps sweet spot is not a bad mechanic, it actually makes sense but it needs better implementation, and glint doesn't need to be removed but it needs to make sense. How can a scope have glint when you are in a dark room, is fine if you are on a hill but otherwise its as bad or worst then auto spotting before the nerf.

I do agree that recon is a good class but its implementation is really bad when you compare it to other classes. Sniper path has a ground to stand on with the skills given but other than that it can't compete. While spec ops path is completely overshadowed by the sniper. Most of it feels like an afterthought or catering to players that don't like stealth tactics.

I do like to switching my play style with recon. I enjoy sabotaging vehicles and setting traps for infantry while spotting enemies for my allies but if you take a closer look at other classes, it is insane how overpowered they are getting. Not raging as this has been happening for years but the post is right in pointing it out, to find a better solution like with auto spotting. As a sniper player i like the mechanic but as a battlefield player (not just me) this was broken and I'm glad is getting nerf (would prefer removing it as this should be a human skill not automated). At the end of the day all we can do is point out issues and let it run its course.

Ps. Stealth class that can't hide or remain hidden by game design it can't be anything else but broken or flawed
