I've seen people mention that it might be to avoid paying weapons manufacturers for using the real names. I don't know if that's correct, but it does make some sense to me.
ElliotLH I think this is exactly it, in order to prevent having to pay for licenses to use real manufacturers names they use fake names.
It’s common practice in the gaming industry.
It does certainly make sense. Saves money and avoids any issues people might have with supporting the arms industry.
Now you mention it being common, I seem to remember skimming an article about it when Fallout76 came out, as Bethesda did something similar.
