If it's just a matter of sticking together while joining a match. Squads of 4 players are fine, but the game would need to support 8 player parties. Changing the squad size unnecessarily breaks existing systems.
There are a few problems with the idea though:
- It becomes increasingly difficult for the matchmaker to find a server as you have more players that need to join at once. You'd often have to spool up new server instances just to let players join together. You'd essentially have to wait for servers to fill up.
- Team stacking is already an issue with 3-4 players. An uncoordinated team against a coordinated group of 8 players is asking for balance to be thrown out of the window. You'd pubstomp pretty much any match you get into. Of course that's lots of fun for you and your clanmates, but it's not very fun for the randoms that just want to have a decent game.
Instead I'd much rather have Portal give the admin the option to assign players to a certain team, so you can easily organize scrims. Organized players should play against organized players.

Common sense.
I've seen this happen all too often in the past, the team of randoms just start leaving and you end up with a dead match.
Portal is definitely the answer for larger groups to play together.
