Well i gave it a try, and they already did it with 2042. I can assure you team play is not going to be how most players are going to play which is sadly another good feature that will be lost for this game. Can only hope that they will be able to balance it well to make up for this mechanic (if the go with open weapons).
Ps. You can play solo in team based games but the difficulty of staying alive ramps up. Which i found it to be a nice feature as a sniper (reward team play while increasing the challenge on solo play with out having to introduce complicated mechanics)
