Please bring back community server hosting on third party hardware providers

Please enable the community to support the game long-term. Look at Battlefield 4 and how it remains active even today. Let the community help ease the burden on your clearly overloaded servers.

The "community-hosted" servers and the "persistence" setting are misleading in their current form. Either you can’t spawn a server, or it gets shut down after 24 hours. Who can build a player base in just 24 hours, or is expected to idle on an empty server until players randomly stumble in because they accidentally discovered the server browser?

I understand this game is currently facing a lot of ongoing issues, and as a developer myself, I know how daunting it can be to tackle such a complex pile of challenges. However, this feature is already so crucial for countless Battlefield fans that it needs to be prioritized and addressed in the very near future.

  • Agree, but it's never gonna happen.

Closest we're gonna get is some kind of server rental thing.

I agree to but also think it will never happen.

Greedy Corp EA wants to control the experience and doesn't actually like Battlefield fans let alone ones that prefer BF games they bought years ago.

They want new players for every title even though they will get bored and disappear, that's fine because EA exec share option bonuses don't have anything to do with long-term appeal and they will be bringing out a new version that they want people to buy again in a couple of years anyway.

You might be right. A rental server model from EA could at least be a decent compromise—if they guarantee solid performance and proper tick rates for those who pay. EA could make extra revenue, and players would finally get the persistent servers they want.

That said, it’s a familiar story: capitalism seems to be ruining so many of the good things we used to have.

Even though you’re right, I still hope the devs and project leads might surprise us with a glimmer of hope. I’m willing to wait a few more months, but I’m keeping my expectations low. :-D
