Rangefinder: A Design of Convenience and Disaster 《

The rangefinder is undoubtedly a powerful function. It can automatically reset the crosshair within one kilometer, making the sniper rifle almost "shoot wherever it points". When the zero button of the rangefinder is bound to the weapon zoom button, the entire sniping process is smooth and natural, the sniping experience is greatly improved, and the entry threshold is significantly reduced.

However, problems soon follow. As a long-range support weapon, the sniper rifle isn’t designed for close-quarters combat. When the rangefinder makes sniping too easy, players tend to stay in the back and scope comfortably instead of pushing the front line.

Especially when both sides are evenly matched—or when one side starts to fall behind—teammates often give up on capturing objectives and retreat to play sniper instead.

Worse still, the combination of thermal scope, rangefinder, and suppressor turns the game into a full-blown “sniper war.” Map design becomes meaningless, pacing collapses, and the match loses all tension and flow.

Developers should consider greatly increasing the attachment cost of the rangefinder so it’s no longer a “must-have tool.” Or better yet, revert to the traditional manual range estimation system—bringing skill and experience back into sniping. Only then can the battlefield regain its diversity and fun.

It can be done in real life. There are scopes that zero at the press of a button all they did was make it a game mechanic.

BF4 even had a scope that showed the range, and you’d just set your zero to match within 100m or so. It’s really not that big of an issue if anything, the game could use more realism. Snipers don’t even always one-hit kill to the head.

They need to remove the whole attachment cost system. It’s annoying and pointless to be limited by what you can stick on your gun.

  • I agree with what the post states but the issue is the implementation on the mechanics.

Thermal should work the same except it shouldn't tell you who are enemies or allies. It should only highlight heat signatures and it would need to depend on players awareness to figure out who is or isn't an allie

Range finder should passively show the distance your reticle is aiming at, player should be the one to manually set the zeroing

Sweet spot shouldn't be based on range but rather it should be deliberate. In order to activate it you need to hold your breath and wait for the SR to focus (this allow other classes to be able to counter in exchange for reacon getting a 1 hit KO), only then would sweet spot activate. Getting shot, moving, and recoil after a shot would make you lose focus and null sweet spot activation until you regain focus (this would make sweet spot deliberate and not lucky) otherwise its a regular shot which only 1 hit ko if you get a head shot

I don't disagree that recon needs improvement to be relevant with current fps but you also have to balance what they are capable so that no class feels OP

Increase the points required to equip the rangefinder, making it a luxury item—if you want a rangefinder, you have to give up other attachments! In real life, rangefinders don’t auto-zero; they’re always manually zeroed. Battlefield 6’s rangefinder zeroing in just one second is way overpowered (it feels like a bug). Long-press manual zeroing can be kept!

Yes, one-second auto-zeroing is way too powerful (it feels like a bug); long-press manual zeroing is what’s realistic.

That’s not actually true though.. is it... Auto-zeroing scopes do exist in real life. There are models like the iAiming iA-612 Smart Thermal Scope, which has a patented First Shot Auto Zero feature, and the ATN X-Sight series with One Shot Zero built in. Even the Burris Eliminator has a rangefinder and ballistic computer that instantly adjusts your aiming point when you press the button.

So the concept isn’t unrealistic they just turned existing tech into a gameplay mechanic.  Battlefield’s version just makes it more seamless. If anything, they should focus on making snipers behave more realistically instead of nerfing features that are already possible in real life.
