Restricting Rooftop Access Is a Mistake and Anti-Battlefield Esprit

Battlefield has always differentiated itself by being a game where if it felt intuitive you could probably do it. Fence standing in the way of your Tank? Barrel right over it without batting an eye. Enemy hunkered down behind a wall? Fire an RPG to smoke em out. That space underneath a tank look just big enough to prone under? You're right it is!

Restricted rooftops are par for the course in games like Counter Strike or Call of Duty and it works to some extent because these are more conventional formulaic games where static maps are expected. In contrast, Battlefield has always been the creative person's shooter and these rooftop restrictions really feel like a missed opportunity to capitalize on what Battlefield excels at. This is doubly true given the introduction of the ladder tool which would seemingly have been a great fit for a map like Cairo.

To be sure, not every rooftop needs to be accessible and the accessibility should be designed into the map so as to ensure fairness and flow. I've see the argument made that without helicopters, roof access is untenable. I would counter that once you introduce helis then you've all but rendered rooftops useless as you become a prime target for said helis. There are legitimate concerns though about ensuring rooftop access doesn't become rooftop supremacy, but I feel that there are mechanics that could ably keep roofers in check such as mortars and the ability to blow out roofs from below with some high explosive fire and C4 drones that could give roofers a nasty surprise. Having some good sightlines to allow for counter sniping could also contribute to population control.

I fully understand that the devs wanted this to be a flatter, low vert map, but I think that market is already highly served elsewhere. Restricting rooftops kills that creative spirit of striving for a tactical advantage and homogenizes the whole affair to the detriment of players. A big part of what makes these maps feel alive is the ability to find all the great spots, both for defense and for traversal.

I hope the devs will reconsider and allow the ladder to shine on this map. Don't kill fun in its crib!

  • AGREED 10000%.  Why in the world, when we have been so use to roof access, would they literally cut all roof access off?  Its stupid and makes the map feel bland af.

well, the problem is that they have no time to balance it for the release with the rooftop access and in the beta it was exploited a lot. The ideal scenario would be to lock the map under labs and find a solution to bring balance with rooftop access and  release it later for all.

  • Well put, even though I never tried to climb a single roof :D

There's nothing wrong with having some maps without roof access and not every roof needs to be accessible on those that do, but I think the future of battlefield is expanding upon that spirit of "if it instinctively feels like I should be able to do it, I should be able to do it."

Cairo, imo, just begs to have roof access and I don't subscribe to the notion that you need to have helis to balance roofers. My OP outlines numerous viable counters that can be employed to counter them. I think once you've personally had the satisfaction of blowing the roof out from under a sniper you'll come around to my way of thinking.

Remember how Battlefield Bad Company 2 had such "amazing" destruction? It was really cool to blow up a building to the point it was nothing more than a pile of rumble. At least, until vehicles flattened every single building on the map and then proceeded to farm infantry players. Battlefield 4's Siege of Shanghai had the destroyable skyscraper. Yet in similar fashion, the map became worse when it was destroyed.

That's why the more modern additions left a skeleton of a building standing, so players had at least some form of cover. It wasn't because the game couldn't technically support destruction. Battlefield V solved this quite cleverly by allowing players to construct cover at preset locations.

I'm not against destroying a roof to get rid of a camper on most maps, but on Siege of Cairo, there's absolutely no good reason to allow rooftop access, other than a few preselected spots. It's a map that's specifically designed with lanes and corridors in mind. It's really a non-issue and at launch there will be plenty of open maps where you'll be able to camp or destroy rooftops all you want.
