Revive Custom Emblems with 1 Option for the "600+ Customization Options on PC"
I've seen the demand for custom emblems to be brought back appear here and there. And for each one of them, you'll always, always, find the same thing about why it shouldn't make a comeback and that the only ones to blame are ourselves. As if it might as well have been all of us who made those emblems. It paints the sky gray, yet you find those who offer a silver lining. An idea of an option that EA and DICE could add to help save a part of Battlefield that was stripped from us all.
Many have brought up this idea when met with dismissive comments about bringing back custom emblems. Not only is this option simple, but it is also not a new one. Valve has done this before with Left 4 Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2. Their option is called Disabled Sprays, and it can either be enabled or disabled. By default, this setting is enabled so that you cannot see sprays. So if you disable it, the sprays you end up seeing are because of your discretion. This option allows for players that want to see sprays and players that don't want to see sprays to play in the same game. Something that Battlefield can adopt into their own game that has been advertised to have "600+ customization options on PC." But why stop at a simple enable and disable option when you can go the extra mile? Especially for those who are in the gray area when it comes to wanting to see custom emblems or not.
You may want to see your custom emblem. No, of course you want to! And you may want to see your friends' custom emblems as well as, if it gets added, your clan's custom emblem. And you may want to see other players' custom emblems if you dare choose to do so. All these things can be layers of your social bubble in Battlefield 6. So the layers of your social bubble in order, starting with you, would be: you, your friends, your clan, other clans, and other players. With these in mind, an option to enable custom emblems based on how far in your bubble you'd want to be able to see custom emblems from would be ideal. Since a clan is something you can choose to make/join and share the same emblem ඞmongst other players, then it's a thing you can trust at about the same level as an online friend. So those two can be grouped together. Making a total of 5 possible settings for the visibility of custom emblems. Something like Disabled, Enabled for You, Enabled with Friends & Clan, Enabled with Friends & Clan and Other Clans, and Enabled for Everyone. Giving you more control over who you see custom emblems from. It could be beneficial for live streamers, like how sometimes, in some games, there's Streamer Mode to hide or replace other players' names or to replace copyrighted music with uncopyrighted music.
If the option to choose who you see custom emblems from exists, then there might not be as much moderation, or even AI moderation, needed for custom emblems. Because you could have the option enabled where you safely trust your friends with their expected custom emblems, or you could choose to enable it for everyone and risk seeing the expectably unexpected custom emblems of random players' emblems. Not to get rid of moderation, but to reduce stress in moderation.
There was one other reason that I've heard about why custom emblems are not being brought back. That reason being that it was removed so that the developers could monetize premade emblems. To this, I say if the devs are worried about players not buying premade emblems, just make detailed emblems that you can't recreate 0.9:1 with the 20-40 layer limit with custom emblems. That, or just make good emblems.
To sum it all up, EA and DICE could revive custom emblems if they just had an option with 5 levels of choices for players to choose who they trust to show custom emblems from (Disabled, Enabled for You, Enabled with Friends & Clan, Enabled with Friends & Clan and Other Clans, and Enabled for Everyone). It should be set to Disabled by default. If set to Enabled for Everyone, give a warning of what to expect from online strangers.
Sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to go a bit in-depth with what I believe could lead to a potential comeback for emblems in the franchise to make a return.
