Honestly, you can have too much smoke on the battlefield. If everyone has smoke grenades the effect would be like fighting in an old time Victorian London fog, and nobody wants that.
Smoke grenades are essential to the support class because they provide cover so that downed soldiers can be resuscitated safely. The support class will also provide smoke when capturing objectives.
When I played the Support class in the open beta, I was surprised at how useful the class was and how much I enjoyed it. Ammo crate, healing, resuscitation of soldiers, protective barricades, LMG weapons, etc., what a great class it is. And the support class shines the most when it goes with frontline assault troops to the objectives.
But, if EA DICE let's everybody use smoke grenades at some point, I have no problem with that.

SpiritofGames I agree with what you are saying. I also think that smoke grenades are very important for the support class, and that the support class pairs really well with assault. However I do think that there is a good argument to have smokes available on the assault class as well.

There's only one situation in which there's ever too much smoke, and that's on maps like Metro, Locker or Redacted. It's "meatgrinder" maps that are specifically designed to be, small, linear, full of choke points and require smokes to even make something happen. Guess what, people do want that. Not only that, but those maps are extremely popular as well.
In every other map it's not an issue, because you're not required to constantly push chokepoints. In Battlefield 2042 you could have smoke grenades + smoke launchers equipped at the same time and not once have I ever seen people abuse it outside of those meatgrinder maps.

SpiritofGames Too much smokescreen should have mechanics that counter it instead of denying the availability of smoke nades on all the classes.
The most apparent counter to smoke grenades that does not need IR scopes would be to make it so that explosions inside the smoke screen can have an effect like dispersing some of the smoke etc.
