Snipers debuffed to the moon

Greetings,

Snipers, how do they play? Depending on the one you pick you get a sweat spot (yes sweat not sweet), these range from ~70m-150m plus or minus like ~20m. This is the range that you can land an upper torso shot for a kill instead of just a head shot. Why is it the sweat spot? Well, that is because even the new rifles sweat spot, puts you smack dab in the functional range of pretty much every single gun in the game giving your slow, bolt action rifle with a beacon of 'ohh, look at me, ima snipah" shining down the lane for everyone to see.

Why? In BF3 sniper glint wasnt as big of a deal as the maps offered more geometry to lay down to narrow you LOS to only where you wanted to shoot. Or you could make a small sniper hole in a buildings wall and lay back inside and snip through that tiny hole you knifed into the wall or pistol'd.

Now, you are hoping to get a 1 shot kill, in a game with even faster characters than even, with guns that if you dont ding them in the head, they just keep running. Snipers should be if anything nerfed at extreme short range, like 100m in if anything to promote actual recon sniping and spotting. now you have to hope you can line a shot up in time before the world notices the light house that has bullets flying out of it.

Then, if someone runs up on you, you have to pray, your crappy pistol kills them because they shoot so slow, and do so little damage, having a sidearm is almost pointless in this game. Its almost better to just try and reload than to flip to your side arm if you are fighting off a squad of players solo, as you may get 1 with a pistol then die to the buddy because your TTK is so low.

  • In the earliest BF games, using a sniper rifle was pretty tricky and in those early games 'too many' snipers was never really a thing as I recall. As the series went on you sometimes had rounds where one team was getting stomped so a lot of the losing side would choose to be a sniper and it was still tricky to use a sniper rifle so they were useless and only an annoyance to their own team. Then for the Devs have progressively made snipers easier to use, possibly because they have reduced the classes and didn't want one out of four to be under used so they've made sniping progressively easier, but still a pretty useless class if half your team chooses to be one. So we now have dumb things like sweet spots and then scope glint to try and balance that out. Plus we now have to have content for the sake of content so we have loads of guns that mostly act the same instead of having maybe half a dozen distinct chooses. Less is sometimes more.
