Hi there.
What you are describing looks like the new version of the good old BSOD(Blue Screen of Death).
I would suggest you check your windows minidump files as they would contain more data on what has happened. You can read those easily with software such as WhoCrashed(Just an example, and what I usually use). It will automatically find the dump files and display them in a more readable way. There you will probably find what bugheck code windows is throwing and a clue to what has happened.
It would also help to know the temperature of you hardware during the crashing. Are any components overheating? You can use Afteburner for realtime monitoring, or HWInfo64 and enable logging before starting the game. The CSV file can then be uploaded(drag and drop) into HWInfo Online view website for instant overview. Or you could add data to excel sheet or whatever you like.
