I was Master Prestige Maxed out, finished ranked 881st place and in this new season, I'm back to Gold while my buddy starts Diamond. Everyone who is Max Master Prestige is meant to start in Diamond. What's going on? Aren't you meant to jump 2 levels back?

That's correct, I was also Master 5 and started at Gold. People who were Master or Diamond start at Gold, and whether you're Master 2 or 5 doesn't matter you still start at Gold. All my Master 5 friends reset to Gold, so there's nothing wrong here; you just misunderstood something.
