Black screen no icon in the game launcher - how many years and still an issue

Title says it all.

Opening battle packs is dark. Like someone has turned the lights off and you can just make out the jimmybar / crowbar opening the chest. No Icon displayed on the weapon and gadgets etc.

Gone through and tried all the fixes from reddit, EA forums etc and still get the black screen, no icons etc in the game launcher for BF1. Funny thing is, if I load BF4 and then go into BF1 from the launcher and search around the soldier stats, loadouts, weapon and gadgets and assignments all works. As soon as I load the BF1 "game", still via launcher, after clicking a menu or 2, black screen no icons again.....

I see this happens on some console platforms too going by the forums I stumbled on.

Is there an actual fix out there or is this all on EA/DICE?

After a lot of testing I finally figured out what causes the disappearing menu bug in Battlefield 1 when using the EA App.

It isn’t the cache or the Twinkle folder. The issue comes from having “blank” friends on your EA account — people who show up with no name and an empty profile. For some reason, Battlefield 1’s menus break if they’re on your friends list.

The only way I’ve found to fix it is:

    1. Open Battlelog (not the EA App).
    2. Go through your friends list.
    3. Remove anyone you can’t match to your actual EA App friends list (the blank/nameless ones).

After I cleared those out, the menus immediately came back and I’ve played for hours without a single issue.

So if you’re stuck with broken menus, check your EA friends list in Battlelog — removing those ghost profiles fixed it for me.

  • Hey VegemiteCrumpets I think I've found a fix for the issue. Do you have any friends on the EA App without a name? Like it's a blank profile and when you click to chat it opens a chat with yourself? If so, you will need to try removing them via Battlelog. Let me know if you need help identfying it or anything :)

I think you have fixed it for me!

Did as you said, then poked around the menus for 5 minutes, no black screen / blank icons.

It usually broke with in 30 seconds.

So anyone else that stumbles on this thread, give this a go!

Glad to hear! If it continues to work please mark it as the solution so others can find it if needed :)
