Once I have loaded the game on my PS3 and have access to the in-game menues, I cannot move beyond the options. For example everytime I click on multiplayer or my soldier the game freezes. Does not happen with other games and my internet connection is working.

It may be the game disc that is a little scratched. Clean it with a damp paper, or the like, and try again. If there are scratches and they are too big, you can submit disc at a local gaming business and they can fix the disc for you.
It can also be games data that is occupied. Try to restart the game and your PS3. Report back here if you have more questions about this.

Yes, it can also be that your firewall blocking you. Try to disable the firewall for the port you're using and try again. Report back here again if the problem exist after doing so.

I'm having the exact same problem. My first disc stopped working and I bought a new one, and just downloaded aftermath. It seems that there are a lot of people having this problem just from searching. The disc is brand new and I already cleared the game data. A lot of people say they encountered the problem after downloading Aftermath
Mine is also doing this. I noticed however that if I disconnect the ethernet cord it unfreezes. This means the PS3 must be waiting to connect but (probably) since PSN is being janky it will take until they fix it. Also, the whole thing about "if you have played within [ ] days you can still play" is definitely wrong, as I played two days ago and this started happening yesterday.
We will just have to wait. *twiddles thumbs*
Has nyone fixed this yet! I paid money for this game.. i feel I should be paid to work to get a game to go on a console. That's why I bought a console. I have no other issues on my other games working online.
With BF3, it hangs on multiplayer or coop, but starts campaign mode just fine. I have very little interest in playing campaign and a ton of interest to play it online!
