Can't download Battlefield 1, due to files in use

Hello,

I recently have downloaded Battlefield 1 as an early enlisted. I was able to play yesterday but when I tried to play today I wasn't able to. I don't know why exactly, I thought that maybe something needed to update or repair so I tried to update thegame. Now it is stuck in the download section and won't complete because it saysthe files are in use.

The direct message says, "There was a problem while updating your game. One or more files that requires an update may be in use. If the issuepersists please restart your computer and resume the update."

I have restarted my computer multiple times and nothing has changed. I then uninstalled Battlefield 1 and reinstalled it. It once again stopped about 85% finishedand gave me the same message. I even uninstalled origin entirely and downloaded it again to see if it would help. Nothing has helped.

I haven't been able to find anything online so anybody that could help would begreatly appreciated.

    I figured out the problem.

It was one lonely corrupted/unreadable file in the Battlefiled 1 directory that would let me delete it. So I scanned my drive and it got rid of the file for me. I reinstalled Battlefiled 1 using normal settings and it worked perfectly.

Thank you again to @DarkAmaranth1966 for all of your help. It means a lot to me so thank you for your time and effort in helping me.

    Hi @TheMarine27,

Lets see if a safe mode download gets the game installed for you.

In Origin, click on the word ORIGIN at the top.

    Choose Application Settings.

Go to Diagnostics at the top of the panel that opens.

    Turn Safe Mode Downloading ON.

    Do a Clean Boot.

Disable and firewall or antivirus that may not be disabled on a clean boot.

    Run Origin as Administrator.

Try your download again. It will be slower in safe mode but, that may get the game installed properly for you.

  • Thank you for the response, @DarkAmaranth1966.

Unfortunately this did not work for me. I tried what you said and I got the same error. I also tried to restart in "Safe Mode with Networking" to see if that would work it also did not help.

If you have any other ideas I will gladly try them. If not then that is ok as well I will try some other random stuff and hope for the best.

Again thank you very much for the response!

  • Alright, @DarkAmaranth1966, here it is. One thing already is that it said to click the "Run 64-Bit DxDiag" if you have a 64-bit computer. I do have a 64-bit computer but there was no option for me to click it. Otherwise here is the report.

That should only happen when the files needed are in use by another program and, those would be .dll (shared library) files.

    A Clean Boot.

Disabling antivirus and firewall if they are not disabled on a clean boot and, running Origin as Administrator. should clear that.

The only thing it can be is something that uses a shared dll that is not disabled on a clean boot.

I do see a lot of crashes form Daemon tools so, if any of those associated processes start on a clean boot, try ending them.

  • Hey, @DarkAmaranth1966, thanks again for all of your help. I uninstalled Daemon tools cause I wasn't using it ever and I also unplugged any and all things that I did not need to see if that would help.

I did another Clean Boot and did what you said. I turned off my firewall and ran Origin as an administrator. Unfortunately that did not fix the problem. The same error message came up again. And I still cannot move forward in my download. I don't know if I mentioned this earlier but it download the full game (40.39 GB) but it will not patch in the final 7 GB. I don't know any other programs that would share a .dll, so I am lost on what to do next.

Again thank you for all of your help, even if none of the proposed solutions have worked it as still been good to finally be able to at least try something to fix the problem. So thank you for that.

  • @DarkAmaranth1966,

    I don't know anymore.

I used the system file checker and it found no damaged files that it had to fix. After that I once again did a clean boot and looked in the task manager for anything that did not look like Origin or windows, I did not find anything their either though there could be a file I am missing somehow (Is there a way to check for that)? I honestly have no idea what to do anymore. You have helped me so much and I shouldn't ask for anymore but do you have any more ideas I can try?

Once again thank you so much for your help!
