[PC] May Patch | FPS Drops from ~96 to 45| Possible reason: 2D Graphics Overlay?

Like some others I've been having FPS drops. I've checked all the usual suspects e.g. driver updates, different settings in Nvidia Control Panel and in game, as well as with and without software like Afterburner and Cortex. Here is what I've been able to narrow it down to (by change really tbh):

1. Example of issue: Fort De Vaux map:
a. Without enough players there is no graphic overlay (objectives, etc.) frame rates are a solid 80/90 fps about
b. With enough players and after the match starts frame rates in the map screen start dropping, then start to drop in game from around 50 and back up to 90 or so

These frame drops occur on multiple maps and different game modes. Sometimes it appears to occur right around taking or getting shot for example, other times it appears to be random.
Now I've heard this was a problem with the Apocalypse update(?), but it seems to possibly be back with the May update?

It's really annoying, especially with the 'low fps' icon-o-doom that you can't turn off on the right of the screen. The issue interferes with in game concentration.
It's come to the point that the drops and stuttering at times is so annoying and frustrating that I'm seriously considering not renewing my Origin membership which is up for renewal (until it is fixed), sorry, I just don't feel like wasting money and time on a frustrating experience, there is no fun in that.

2. Specs:
CPU: FX8350
GPU: Strix 970/1050 TI (run separately, but it doesn't appear to be GPU related, or it is a Nvidia specific issue? I'm not sure)
RAM: 24 GB DDR3
Powersupply: Corsair 750W
Motherboard: MSI 990

As you can see well within the minimum required specs for the game. It's not the hardware and the issue is specific to this game, other people (with better hardware) are having similar issues, please fix the game or explain to use how we can fix this ourselves in the settings.

It went well for a few rounds, then it went to absolute garbage again for multiple rounds. I'm sick and tired of missing shots, getting killed, and losing matches because of this FPS issue.

It has become so frustrating I have decided to uninstall the game and not renew Origin.

This is a AAA, expensive, title, EA is a multi million dollar company, they are too busy with loot boxes then actually making their games perform.

Many people for months have asked to fix this, and DICE does drop patches, but until this issue is resolved I am done as a player with this series.

    Thank you for replying

    1. This is after an upgrade and a clean install of Windows. I don't see how a clean boot would help anything, as it is a FPS issue only with this game.

Also wouldn't that shut off the Nvidia Drivers? So how would the graphics card even function. I'm sorry I don't feel like using my computer as test bench for stuff like this,

especially since the page says it can cause damage to the system, which of course EA would take no responsibility in, so no change

    2. Moving the document folder to desktop? Wouldn't that just reset my settings?

Thx for trying, but this issue is with the game I'm pretty sure tbh. Even with everything on low it can happen, even from a clean install of BF1

    Possible other causes:

    1. One thing that came up is that in BF4 when somebody would cheat in game it could cause server performance issues. This might be a player cheating, when they join.

    2. I'm keep an eye on thermal throttling. Testing so far with some settings shows the CPU at 60%, and GPU at 70% about with temps around 50 and 62 degrees respectively about. However, I'm seeing cases where the CPU will go up to 100% for a short period of time, to go back down to about 80%.  I've readjusted the cooling to maintain around 50 degrees, because at some point I saw the CPU temp spike at about 60, and GPU temps running at 72. Which compared to the normal averages is a significant spike in temps. What this is caused by I don't know. It possible seems effects related as well, however turning down to effects to low for example doesn't seem to solve the issue.

Now in 2. that spike could cause the CPU/GPU to throttle perhaps which could be causing the FPS drop, which may also explain why it can happen after a duration of playing instead of right away (in some cases). There is a lot of unknowns and maybes here, and just from observations so far, and these may change as a clearer picture develops.

Hope it helps in tracking it down though. I'm going to try to take screenshots when the fps drops, and at the same time look at the CPU/GPU graphs. Although this may be tricky, hopefully it will help track this down.

One thing that I find is interesting is that other people reporting this are reporting similar numbers in FPS drops e.g. 45 as a low, and then back to 100 or so later. It's just weird, it runs at 79/80 the entire time, and then for a bit just starts fluctuating, and then goes normal again, to start fluctuating again. Something's causing, just not sure what yet

    No problem ! @WoollyMammoth10

    1,

Clean boot is not the same as safe boot, clean boot is to see if there are any programs on the PC that is interfering with Battlefield 1. It will not shut off any drivers, only programs.

2, I have seen performance issue reports to be solved with cleaning out the document folder. That is why I recommend it. 🙂

So far I have only seen your report an issue with the UI elements of the game (if you have seen more reports on this, more then welcome to link me those topics), and I want to make sure its not on your end. 🙂

I may have narrowed an instance of this down:

I set FPS to remain steady at 60 outside of the game, and uninstalled GPU Tweak II and Razer Cortex

I also changed achievements to see if that would make a difference.

The game keeps a steady 60 fps about for  the rounds played on St. Quentin Scar. However I'm seeing severe FPS drops in the following, playing as recon:

    1. On St. Quentin Scar when the blimp crashes

    a. If you're close to where the blimp crashes then FPS will drop down to low 40's (and possibly lower) about, you can notice the game struggling

    b. If you're far away when the blimp crashes (say it crashes on E but you're on B about) then FPS will stay the same.

However when you come close to the crash site, even minutes later, then FPS tanks to similar values as above in point a
