Update positions to current terminology to improve gameplay
Severely disappointed that with an opportunity to build a new game the team at EA did not take the opportunity to update positional terminology. They continue to use the same terminology as the last 25 years. First, elements of the game have changed. Second, it hurts gameplay and realism.
By separating players into Left and Right designations and using outdated defensive positional terminology it detracts from the game.
I am not speaking about within a depth chart. I understand using those designations when conforming a roster to a team's specific scheme within a depth chart. I am referring to the general roster as it pertains to constructing a team and recruiting.
The same issue exists in Madden, where I think it is an even bigger problem because the nature of the pro game vs college game.
It would be so helpful to separate players into positional "buckets" on the roster screen. And then they can be placed into their specific positions on the depth chart. An example would be something like this:
QB
RB
WR
TE
OT
IOL
IDL
EDGE
LB
S
CB
K
P
LS
This would be so helpful for recruiting and the transfer portal. And it would help alleviate issues with the CPU controlled teams acquiring players that are not properly utilized within their scheme. I think it would also help with archetypes designations.
Beyond that, it would be awesome to have a designation other than Left and Right on defense:
NT / 1 tech
DT / 3 tech
5 tech
9 tech
SAM
MIKE
WILL
$ - nickel SAM
field safety
boundary safety
field corner
boundary corner
I admit this is probably asking for too much. Seeing as EA can't even implement simple positional adjustments to improve and bring their game up to date. And I know there is probably too much variety in defense schemes to achieve this consistently. And I am sure other people have a different idea of what the positions should be and it would be easy to argue over. But I think doing something like this would be both awesome for the game and educating the community. Regardless of the direction they go, it would be an improvement over the outdated and unrealistic designations they are currently using.
So disappointed this was not addressed.
