Crash/Stay - need an Edge coach setting vs boot pass plays

When a boot or run play occurs with the edge player unblocked, the defender has a choice to make:

- Do I crash and try to tackle the RB?

- Do I stay out in case this is a boot by the QB?

This needs to be a coach setting in Madden/CFB. Maybe it can be determined by the option defense coach adjustments - if I choose to play QB on options, then that Edge should never crash down to tackle the RB on unblocked plays. If I choose to play RB on options, then that leaves the boot open.

In real life, especially the NFL with its under-center offenses, coaches are watching the edge players to see if they are crashing hard on run plays, which gives them the boot passes.

Additionally, this also opens up split zone plays, split zone PA (with the sniffer leaking to the flat, pretending to block).

There is a whole mini game/mini scheme that is missing from the game because we have no control over what the edge does on unblocked run/pass plays besides zone read.

Mental_Guitar , your suggestion (while constructive) proves my point though.

Ideally, one of two things needs to happen:

    1. If I set my option defense to play QB, my edge players better crash hard on the HB when unblocked - and that includes both actual run plays and play-action boot passes.  I've decided this would be ideal, instead of the #2 suggestion, and original request in this post.

This would be ideal because in real life, if the edge player is crashing hard on unblocked plays, I'm going to hit him with boot plays, and allow my QB tons of time on a rollout.

If the defender is squeezing hard on a split zone (unblocked by the backside OT, blocked by the H-back coming across), then we can start getting play-action, and QB keepers.

    2. Create an extra coach mechanic on how to play boot/rollout or even split zone run plays.

As to your suggestion about existing mechanics:

The coach adjustments for zone read ("read option" as you've called it) have no effect on boot passes.  They do have an impact on how the defense plays against WR sweep plays though.

For example, if the defense sets the adjustment to "play HB" (aka crash), and if you run a WR sweep (under center), you will get to the edge every time.  If the defense sets the adjustment to "play QB", you will get tackled for a loss every time.

  • Have you tried setting your read option settings to conservatives to allow the Edge defender to play the QB and pre-play adjusting to a contain? This has always worked for me pretty well and if you are sure it’s a boot you can guess pass, however when run committing your edge defender will crash the the appropriate run commit and forget all previous coaching adjustments.
