Safety Bad Zone Coverage

When playing safety, if you’re not in the EXACT zone you get bad coverage. Even being an inch outside of the zone highlighted during the play you will be penalized with a bad zone coverage grade. Really aggravating to deal with if a screen or flat is thrown and I can’t get to the proper spot

  • As a safety if your in a zone that is designed to not have you up in the flats you are not supposed to be up in the flats, and would be graded poorly in real life as well because your out of position.  There aren't many plays designed to have the safety playing up at the line because the safety's sole purpose on the field to begin with is to be the last line of defense preventing big plays down the field.  Line of scrimmage is for CB, DE, Will and Sam linebackers 98% of the time...play your position like you should and be accountable for your space.

You’re not getting what I’m saying…. When you’re playing safety and the qb snaps the ball and quick throws(screen/flat route) it you have ZERO time to get to your zone because the zone deepens when the play starts resulting in a bad coverage penalty. I am okay with the bad zone penalty if I’m genuinely nowhere near my zone or if I allow a catch in my zone.
