Can't connect to EA link to play Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars
It's the first game I've ever bought to require third-party fix to run. Why is it even availble to buy?

There is no real official support for the C&C series anymore; third party fixes are the best you're going to get. The C&C community got really good at fixing stuff, though 😉
As for your problem... Generals, Zero Hour, C&C3, Kane's Wrath and Red Alert 3 all used the Gamespy system for their online play, but the whole system has been shut down in July 2014.
However, community servers have already been set up, so it should be possible to play online that way. More information on that can be found at http://cnc-online.net/.
