Whenever I launch C&C 1 and The Covert Operations i.e. the very first C&C game I get a black screen (as though it's launching) before I'm back at the desktop. The other games all appear to work fine though...! Any ideas?
I really want to play the first one (and the whole ultimate collection is supposed to work on w7)!

Since you posted in a three year old thread, I assume you found this place through Google? If such older threads don't help you, it's always advised to simply take a look at the forum's front page and see if any more recent information has been posted there about the subject before bumping the old thread or making your own. The sticky threads at the top, especially those indicated with "read this before posting", usually contain solutions to common problems like this one.
As for the link, it referred to the old official C&C forum, which was recently removed. All links to it now redirect to the Tiberium Alliances forum instead, since it's the only official board that's left.
Anyway, Command & Conquer 1, Red Alert 1 and Tiberian Sun have all been upgraded with community-created unofficial patches that fix a lot of their compatibility problems. I'm fairly sure he was linking to that. You can find them here:
