Command & Conquer Generals and Zero Hour Crash(and burn)

Saturday, ‎August ‎30, ‎2025      ‎8/‎30/‎25     4:49:09 PM
Command & Conquer Generals and Zero Hour. I have repaired and repaired and repaired, but I keep getting the same error after the "splash" screen. [DirectX Error] "Please make sure you have DirectX 8.1 or Higher installed. Also verify that your video card meets the Min. requirements."...

I have checked: I have DirectX 12 installed, and have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card.

Also: Please excuse my flagrant attempt to get my issue noticed a third time, because I have issued a "Report" twice now for this issue.

This is not the first time I have had problems with Command & Conquer games, so please forgive my hesitation in believing they will address this problem quickly. Thank you "EA" for looking at it again this 3rd time (Because of this third, if not direct,  request for this problem to be solved)

Report code:   f5b62003-b0d7-4efc-a98e-c208336631e2                                                                                          Report code:   79e508d8-c362-4657-8cd5-8d6dba4404e7

    P.S. If any players know of a "fix" or "work around" I would appreciate the help. Thank You

  • Posting here doesn't get your report noticed -- EA doesn't monitor these forums for issues, it is a forum for other users to help if they can.

    These games are very old now and running on the latest hardware and software often presents problems.  My only suggestion is running in compatibility mode on a Windows machine.  If this doesn't help then you need to report the issue directly through the EA help pages.,

    Thank you GamerDruid. When I got the games from Origin the .exe file was stored on my hard drive. But with EA I have had problems locating it. When I right-click on the "link" on the EA Web interface,

     I get nothing, and I don't remember what the original name was.

    i.e. was it CandC-GandZ.exe or Command & Conquer Generals and Zero Hour.exe, or CCGZ.exe, or XYZ.exe etc. I don't have an icon on my desktop anymore to help me find the "location" or the executable (.exe .com .bat) filename.

    Can you tell me how to find it?

    Follow-up question: Once I find it and in "properties" set it to run the program in compatibility mode for the original OS, will it still work, seeing how after EA took over, the game has assuredly had the code added too, and even rewritten to enable it to be played through the EA interface. I understand that if I still had the CD's containing the Windows 95 version that I originally purchased, that I could possibly get it to work, but, with all the iterations that it has likely progressed through, is it still the same game?

    One very important point "is the elephant in the room", that is this, EA took over the game AND IS STILL SELLING IT !  I would assume that this means that they are, or should be, supporting it. And on that regard don't get me started on their "Support system", or better yet, Lack of it. Getting a response from them is like watching grass grow or throwing a pebble into a lake, you never know where it will land or how long it might take. But, I digress, the point is, that even though this was an older game, it is now in it's EA infancy and they are required to support it. Thank you for allowing me to vent and enduring my brief tirade.

    Generally, these issues are actually due to the settings file not getting created, or getting created incorrectly:

    I had this problem and I need to change the Options.ini

    go to:

    C:\Users\(your name)\Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Data

    Open the Options.ini

    Change this text to:

    AntiAliasing = 6
    CampaignDifficulty = 1
    GameSpyIPAddress = 0.0.0.0
    Gamma = 50
    IPAddress = 0.0.0.0
    IdealStaticGameLOD = High
    LanguageFilter = false
    MusicVolume = 55
    Resolution = 800 600
    SFX3DVolume = 79
    SFXVolume = 71
    ScrollFactor = 50
    SendDelay = no
    StaticGameLOD = High
    UseAlternateMouse = no
    VoiceVolume = 70
