COMMAND & CONQUER GENERALS/ZERO HOUR. Direct x 8.1 error solution

Go into the program files for the game and find this file :-

dbghelp.dll

Delete it in both the Generals folder and the Zero Hour folder.

Fixed........

  • @brexit1912Yes, that is the general method of fixing the DirectX 8.1 error that is described very often 🙂 But the more topics there are of it, the easier people can find the solution 🙂 Another solution, when the removal of dbghelp.dll doesn't fix the issue, could be to install DirectX 8.1/9: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Command_%26_Conquer:_Generals#DirectX_8.1_error_.28Windows.29 (Just for further reference for other people who find this topic)

    @mrtnptrs

    One noteworthy addition to that guide: it is perfectly safe to remove the extracted DirectX installation files after the installation finished. For some reason, none of these guides tell you that.

    @NyergudsI will add it to the guide, thanks for the feedback! 🙂 Edit: added it! If you have any more feedback on any of those Generals-guides on PCGamingWiki, feel free to give me more feedback 🙂

  • Hi,

    I did try the reinstall of Direct X 8.1 and several of the other solutions listed here, none of them worked for me.

    TBH I had given up of ever getting the issue sorted, until yesterday, when I spotted another user had put up the information (apologies, but didn't notice your name!).

    I was amazed when this worked, and was up until 0300 this morning playing Generals again!!!
