The game is 20 years old and won't run out-of-the-box natively on modern hardware & modern operating systems. The community has created fixes, but it's your choice to be stubborn about this... You might be better off asking for a refund, as you'll surely run into more issues.
i folded and purchased it on steam and i have ZERO issues with resolution now. no crashing or anything. Stubborn wins again!
