Re: C&C Zero Hour Not working on EA App

Hmm.  It looks like my instructions weren't very clear.  I'll try to explain better:

First, try to install the game as before, and when you get the error in the EA App, leave it as "paused", don't cancel it.

Then, open command prompt as administrator, which I think you did.

Next, type the following, but don't press enter until you've typed it all in:

cd C:\Program Files\EA Games\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour\__Installer

You can copy this and paste it by right-clicking in the command prompt.

If you did it right, it should either change the directory, or give the following error.  If you get this error, then the install path is not correct, or it wasn't typed properly.

The system cannot find the path specified.

If you get the error that "C:\program is not recognized..." then the command was missing the "cd" before it.

If it worked right, then the next line should read:

C:\Program Files\EA Games\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour\__Installer>

Then, copy and paste the following, but again, put it all in before pressing enter:

touchup.exe install -locale en_US -installPath "C:\Program Files\EA Games\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour" -autologging

If your locale is not en_US, you may have to change it, otherwise this should work.  Then you just resume the download in the EA App and it will finish the installation.

If you're still getting errors, then maybe attach the screenshot of command prompt.  But I hope this is clear.

  • Thank you so much! You have given me back a game that I haven't played since my childhood! I shall be using this weekend to play it over LAN with my brother. We're close to our 30s now but as children we grew up playing the C&C series and desperately wanted to VS one another again. Thank you!

@Wootoro Open the command prompt by typing "cmd" into the start menu, but instead of pressing enter when the item shows up, right-click it and select "Run as administrator".

@StarJekker Note that depending on the Windows version, it might be necessary to put quotes around the path, for the "cd" command to work on a path with spaces in it. (Also, technically this depends on where the user's games library is located, though I guess anyone who changed that should know that stuff.)

i reinstalled origin and added the following line to C:\ProgramData\Origin\local.xml:

    <Setting key="MigrationDisabled" type="1" value="true" />

now you don't have to start it with ea app, because the ea app update won't show up. not the best solution but you can play the game.

  • I have the same problem and your solution works well. Thank you.

  • This fixed the installation for me but when I try to launch, it starts the EA App which fails to elevate permissions. Game doesn't launch.

  • added the line but still after I log in to Origin it forces me to upgrade to EA App: "The EA app is your new home for PC gaming
Now's the time to upgrade. Install the EA app and log in with your EA Account to find all your games waiting for you."

this does work for me, but only in part, the download works perfectly, after running the command prompts you provided, However after trying to run the game afterwards, I get an error message from the EA App saying the game could not be launched. I tried going around it, and running the executable from the file location, but even then it gives met the same error.

I am having issues since I was forced on to the EA APP. everything was fine on Origin but since moving to the EA APP Generals fails to launch.

It will install no problem but when I click play it says "Hold up, this game needs permissions.  This game requires administrative privileges.  Do you want to grant access and launch game?"

When I click OK the EA APP minimises and then after about 5 seconds re-appears.  I never get access to the Generals launcher, where you choose between Generals and Generals Zero Hour

The Generals launcher, where you choose which version, is set to Admn mode as are both games but nothing loads, even when I launch from the Generals .exe files, when I do that it launches EA APP and I am back in the loop.

Any ideas?  I haven't been able to play Generals since early march and the only change is Origin to EA APP.

I followed the prompts but I get an error that touchup.exe is not a valid program/batch file etc. Any ideas? Submitted multiple tickets and completely uninstalled and EA Support still can't resolve the issue

I managed to install the game through your instructions, yet after finishing the installation the EA app refuses to launch the game. It says it needs permission and askes me to grant access, without succes. Both the exe of the game and the EA app are being run through administrator mode. Any ideas?
