players act this way because of the games basic design is flawed. 

the Dev build a stiff progression wall once player reached level 10 and into the master league. 

originally the dev may  think this is a good idea to make players got that far to pay for unit progression with real currency.  but players quickly find many older players or players spent money can manage higher level ie max out at 12 to 13 which would beat their level 10 max or early level11 units. it felt like pay to have an advantage at times. 

then when they play those special events, players with better micro skills beat them more often than not, this took away their chance to earn Max rewards, defeating the purpose of the incentives for player to pay diamond for such rewards.  

finally, the poorly designed Race event actually rewards player not to play the game: same reward for equal points.  given winner bags a big crate , it is worth the effort to get it hence large number of players would loose to tank their ranking to as low as possible. 

to stop this behavior.  the game has to be redsigned or put new features in it.
